Former OpenAI Engineer Enters Not Guilty Plea in Office Surveillance Case

Olamide

Abdulrahman Alfozan, a former engineer at OpenAI, has officially pleaded not guilty to charges involving the alleged placement of a recording device within the company's workspace.

A Formal Plea in San Francisco

Abdulrahman Alfozan, a former engineer at OpenAI, appeared in a San Francisco federal courthouse on Friday to formally enter a plea of not guilty. The 35-year-old, who was terminated from his position at the artificial intelligence firm following his arrest last month, remains in federal custody as the legal proceedings move forward.

During the Friday hearing, Judge Peter Kang presided over the session, ensuring the defendant was fully aware of his constitutional rights, including his right to remain silent and his right to legal representation. David Rizk, serving as Alfozan’s attorney, waived the formal reading of the indictment before entering the not-guilty plea on behalf of his client.

The Allegations Against Alfozan

The legal trouble for the former engineer began on October 9, when federal agents took him into custody. He currently faces a single charge of intercepting oral communications. Federal prosecutors allege that Alfozan concealed a recording device—purportedly wrapped in toilet paper—behind a television set located in an OpenAI conference room.

The prosecution’s case also points to digital evidence found in connection with the defendant. According to court filings, investigators examined the chatbot history belonging to Alfozan’s wife. Prosecutors claim these records contain multiple prompts related to the construction, testing, and concealment of an audio recording device.

Background and Detention Status

Prior to his employment at OpenAI, Alfozan maintained a career in the technology sector, with roles at Facebook and a Y Combinator-backed startup known as Nash. Additionally, he previously worked as a venture capital investor for a Saudi firm. Having resided in the United States since his college years, Alfozan held a green card as a permanent legal resident. Reports indicate that he was nearing a naturalization interview at the time of his arrest.

Alfozan and his wife resided in Millbrae, California. Neighbors described the couple as generally private individuals who occasionally hosted social gatherings. Since his arrest, Alfozan has been held in detention. A judge previously denied a request for bond, citing concerns that the defendant posed a flight risk.

Next Steps in the Legal Process

With the not-guilty plea now on the record, the case is set to continue with further judicial review. The court has scheduled the next hearing for November 17. As the legal process unfolds, the defense and prosecution will continue to address the allegations surrounding the incident at the OpenAI offices.
