From Underdog to Icon: The Cast of ‘I Play Rocky’ and the Real People Who Defined a Hollywood Legend

As the new film 'I Play Rocky' hits theaters, we take a look at the actors bringing the turbulent, behind-the-scenes story of Sylvester Stallone's breakout hit to life.

The Making of an Underdog Story

The cinematic journey of Rocky is arguably as compelling as the film itself. Directed by Peter Farrelly, I Play Rocky chronicles the arduous path Sylvester Stallone took to bring his vision to the screen. In the 1970s, a struggling Stallone wrote the screenplay specifically to secure a starring role, eventually convincing producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff to back the project. The production was defined by a shoestring budget, physical injuries, and a tense battle with the studio to ensure Stallone played the lead—a decision that saw him turn down a $200,000 payout for the script alone. The result was an Oscar-winning Best Picture that launched a global franchise.

The Cast and Their Real-Life Counterparts

The film features a talented ensemble tasked with portraying the figures who shaped the original Rocky production. Anthony Ippolito steps into the lead role of Sylvester Stallone. Ippolito, who previously portrayed Al Pacino in The Offer, is noted for his highly accurate performance, capturing the voice and mannerisms of the young, ambitious actor who bet his career on his own script.

AnnaSophia Robb portrays Sasha Czack, Stallone’s first wife. Married in 1974, Czack served as a vital emotional support system for Stallone during the difficult shoot and even worked as a still photographer on set. Robb depicts her as Stallone’s primary cheerleader, responsible for typing out his handwritten script pages.

Matt Dillon plays Frank Stallone Sr., the father of the future superstar. Known for his own aspirations as an actor and his work as a barber, the elder Stallone actually appeared in the original Rocky as the timekeeper. Dillon portrays him as a tough, critical figure, reflecting the fraught relationship Stallone has previously described in his own documentary, Sly.

The Producers and Creative Team

The film also explores the complex dynamics behind the camera. P.J. Byrne plays producer Irwin Winkler, depicted as a tough but ultimately loyal figure who eventually championed Stallone’s casting. Toby Kebbell portrays the other half of the production duo, Robert Chartoff, characterized as the more conciliatory partner who navigated the film’s budget constraints.

Jay Duplass takes on the role of director John G. Avildsen, the filmmaker who won an Oscar for Rocky. Duplass portrays Avildsen as a fast-talking director focused on shifting the film’s narrative from a mere boxing story to a character study. Meanwhile, Stephan James plays Carl Weathers, the former professional football player who found his breakout role as Apollo Creed. James captures the bravado of the character, while the film highlights the reality that, much like Stallone, Weathers had limited boxing experience at the time.

Rounding out the cast is Kiki Seto as Talia Shire, who played Adrian. Shire was already an established talent, having earned an Oscar nomination for The Godfather Part II. Seto, in her first feature film role, captures the moments of vulnerability on set, including a memorable scene where Shire reveals she cannot ice skate before a key sequence. I Play Rocky is currently in theaters.
