Godwin Obaje scored an equalizer before receiving a second-half red card as Rangers International secured a hard-fought 1-1 away draw against Rivers United in Port Harcourt.

In a heavyweight clash between the top two sides in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Rangers International fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Rivers United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, despite playing the final twenty minutes with ten men.

Early Breakthrough for Rivers United

According to league reports, Rivers United controlled the opening exchanges on their home turf, generating repeated opportunities through midfielder Abdulrasheed Dabai. Dabai threatened with an early curling effort and coordinated attacking moves alongside Ekene Awazie and Ubong William, though Rangers initially held firm.

The hosts converted their dominance into a lead in the 17th minute by capitalizing on a defensive mistake. Alex Oyowah seized on a loose back pass by Rangers, sprinted down the left side, and drew goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh out of position before squaring the ball to Chijioke Mbaoma, who slotted home into an unguarded net. United maintained the upper hand through the remainder of the first half, nearly extending their margin when another dangerous set-piece from Dabai drifted narrowly past the post.

Obaje Levels Before Seeing Red

Rangers found renewed momentum following the interval, largely sparked by winger Chidiebere Nwobodo. Nwobodo cut through the Rivers United backline from the left flank before sending a cross into the penalty area. After home goalkeeper Ifeanyi Nchekwube parried an initial attempt, striker Godwin Obaje reacted fastest to head home the rebound. While Rivers United defenders argued for offside, match officials confirmed the equalizer.

The visiting side’s fortunes shifted rapidly in the 69th minute. Having already picked up a booking, Obaje received a second yellow card for sustained dissent toward the referee, forcing the reigning champions to navigate the closing stretch a man down.

Jimoh Preserves Crucial Road Point

Reduced to ten players, Rangers pulled back into a deep defensive block to protect the draw. Rivers United intensified their forward push, forcing Jimoh into a series of crucial interventions. The Rangers goalkeeper denied a point-blank attempt from Samson Olasupo in the 78th minute, sustaining a brief injury during the resulting goalmouth scramble before recovering to stop further strikes from Oyowah and substitute Junior Aimufasa.

With six minutes of stoppage time played, Rangers held on to divide the points. The result leaves both clubs tied on 18 points at the summit of the NPFL standings, with Rivers United occupying first place and Rangers remaining second with two games in hand.
