Abia State Police Command Reports Rescue of 10 Children and Wave of Arrests

Olamide

The Abia State Police Command has announced the rescue of 10 stolen children and the arrest of 109 suspects following a series of security operations conducted between September and November.

The Abia State Police Command has released a comprehensive report detailing a series of successful security operations conducted across the state. According to Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi, authorities have rescued 10 stolen children, apprehended 109 suspects, and recovered significant quantities of illicit weaponry and stolen property during a period spanning September 11 to November 6.

Details of the Rescue Operations

The recovery of the 10 children stands as a primary achievement of the command’s recent intelligence-led initiatives. Commissioner Afolabi confirmed that these children have been successfully reunited with their families. Among the specific cases highlighted was the October 11 arrest of two suspects accused of stealing seven-year-old Chiamaka Chikeze and nine-month-old Goodluck Chikeze. The suspects in this case have already been charged in court.

Broad Security Crackdown

Beyond the rescue operations, the command reported a high volume of arrests and recoveries. The 109 individuals taken into custody—comprising 89 men and 20 women—were linked to 211 distinct criminal cases. The police also reported the recovery of 15 firearms and 30 stolen vehicles. These figures reflect a broad effort to curb various forms of criminal activity, ranging from vehicle theft to organized crime.

Addressing Attacks and Cultism

The police report also addressed specific security incidents, including the October 17 attack on the Uratta Divisional Police Headquarters. Commissioner Afolabi stated that investigators have apprehended a suspect who allegedly confessed to leading the gang responsible for the assault. Authorities are currently pursuing other individuals believed to be involved in the attack.

Additionally, the command reported progress in combating campus-related crime. On October 31, two suspected cultists were arrested for allegedly robbing students at Abia State University, Uturu, at gunpoint. One of the suspects reportedly confessed to being a member of the Black Axe Confraternity. A locally fabricated firearm was recovered during this operation.

Operational Strategy and Community Cooperation

Commissioner Afolabi credited these results to a strategy focused on proactive policing, intelligence gathering, and inter-agency collaboration. The command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit was specifically noted for its role in operations at Ubakala, Umuahia South Local Government Area, where officers recovered locally fabricated firearms and ammunition.

While the police have made significant headway in these cases, the commissioner emphasized that investigations remain ongoing for several of the reported incidents. He concluded by calling on the residents of Abia State to maintain their support for law enforcement, noting that timely information from the public remains a critical component in the ongoing effort to reduce criminal activity throughout the region.
