Thirteen Injured in Mazda Bus Crash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Olamide

A commercial bus accident in Ogun State left 13 passengers injured after a tyre burst caused the vehicle to overturn and strike a concrete barrier.

A total of 13 individuals sustained injuries on Friday afternoon following a single-vehicle accident on the Lagos-bound section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. According to an official report from the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the incident occurred at approximately 12:30 pm within the Remo North Local Government Area.

Details of the Incident

The accident involved a Mazda bus, identified by registration number AKD 52 XY, which was transporting 18 passengers at the time. Official reports indicate that the vehicle suffered a sudden tyre burst while in motion. This mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control of the bus, which subsequently overturned and collided with a concrete barrier along the roadside.

Eyewitness accounts cited in the TRACE report corroborate the claim that the tyre failure was the primary cause of the loss of control. Officials noted that the presence of the concrete barrier served as a critical safety buffer, preventing the bus from falling into a deep ditch located adjacent to the expressway.

Emergency Response and Medical Care

The incident gained public attention after actor Kunle Afod raised concerns regarding the speed of emergency services on social media. However, TRACE spokesperson Akinbiyi Babatunde stated that rescue teams from the agency—known as ‘Papa Oscar’—alongside personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), arrived at the scene by 12:48 pm, roughly 18 minutes after the crash.

The 13 injured passengers included two men, eight women, and three children. No fatalities were reported. The victims were transported to three separate medical facilities for urgent care:

  • Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu: One victim.
  • Divine Hospital, Ogere: Nine victims.
  • Isara General Hospital: Three victims.

By Friday evening, a follow-up assessment at Isara General Hospital indicated that four of the injured individuals had been treated and discharged at their own request.

Traffic Management and Investigation

Authorities confirmed that the rescue operation was conducted without obstructing the flow of traffic on the busy expressway. The damaged Mazda bus has since been moved to the TRACE ‘Papa Oscar’ holding facility, where it will remain as part of an ongoing investigation into the crash.

While the immediate cause has been identified as a tyre burst, the investigation remains open. It is not currently known if any further mechanical inspections will be conducted on the vehicle or if additional safety protocols will be enforced by local authorities following this event.

Conclusion

While the accident resulted in multiple injuries, the swift intervention of emergency responders and the presence of roadside safety infrastructure prevented a more severe outcome. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vehicle maintenance and road safety awareness on major transit corridors.
