All Star Elite Pivots E-commerce Strategy to Capture AI-Driven Holiday Traffic

Olamide

As AI agents increasingly influence consumer purchasing decisions, streetwear retailer All Star Elite is updating its digital infrastructure to ensure its products remain visible to both bots and human shoppers ahead of the holiday season.

The Rise of the AI Shopper

The landscape of online retail is undergoing a significant transformation as artificial intelligence agents move from experimental tools to mainstream shopping assistants. For All Star Elite, a streetwear retailer operating approximately 60 physical locations in the United States alongside a growing digital presence, this shift necessitates a fundamental rethink of how products are presented and priced online. With digital sales now accounting for roughly 25% of the company’s total revenue, the stakes for optimizing this new channel are high.

Abhishek Bora, the head of growth at All Star Elite, has observed a distinct uptick in bot-related activity on the company’s website. While the volume remains relatively modest, the trend is undeniable. Over the past month, approximately 1% of the site’s total traffic originated from AI agents—a figure Bora notes was effectively zero just a short time ago.

Adapting to Machine-Readable Retail

The integration of AI into the shopping experience has prompted All Star Elite to adjust its technical approach. Because AI agents process information differently than human users, the company is actively layering machine-readable metadata onto its product listings. This strategy aims to provide contextual details that transcend basic pricing and descriptions.

By including specific attributes—such as whether a particular sneaker is designed for high-performance activities like marathons or for casual social outings—the retailer hopes to improve its visibility when consumers ask AI tools like ChatGPT for product recommendations. This optimization is particularly critical as retailers prepare for the upcoming holiday shopping surge. Industry projections from Adobe suggest that AI-driven traffic to US retail websites is expected to double during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday period compared to the previous year, with AI-facilitated visits currently converting to sales at higher rates than traditional human-led traffic.

Navigating the New E-commerce Landscape

The emergence of AI agents has created a divide in how major retailers approach the technology. Some, like Walmart, have introduced tools designed to facilitate easier navigation for third-party AI agents, allowing them to complete transactions on behalf of users. Conversely, Amazon has opted to block external agents, such as Meta’s Muse, in an effort to steer customers toward its own proprietary assistant, Alexa.

All Star Elite is currently navigating these complexities while observing how its own customer base interacts with these tools. According to Bora, while shoppers are increasingly using AI for product discovery, there remains a notable hesitation regarding automated purchasing. He noted that customers often prefer to use ChatGPT to find items but still wish to personally verify the transaction themselves rather than allowing an agent to finalize the purchase.

Preparing for Holiday Promotions

Beyond product discovery, the company is also reconsidering its promotional strategy. Historically, deals and discounts were crafted to capture the attention of human shoppers through visual appeal and urgency. Now, retailers must account for how AI agents will interpret and respond to these holiday offers. As the busy shopping season approaches, All Star Elite continues to refine its approach to ensure that its brand remains competitive in an environment where the consumer is increasingly assisted by artificial intelligence.
