From Niche Product to $1.5 Billion Empire: How Whisker Revolutionized Pet Care

Olamide

Jacob Zuppke’s journey from digital consultant to CEO of Whisker highlights the power of bold marketing and technological innovation in transforming the mundane chore of cat litter maintenance into a massive global business.

A Marketing Pivot That Changed Everything

In 2015, the landscape of digital marketing was vastly different. Jacob Zuppke, then a digital-media consultant for Automated Pet Care Products, saw an opportunity to utilize the burgeoning influence of social media to promote the company’s flagship product, the Litter-Robot. Long before the term “influencer” became a standard professional title, Zuppke orchestrated a campaign involving 25 popular Instagram cats. During the month of December, these feline accounts gave away the self-cleaning litter boxes to their followers at no cost to the company. The strategy proved highly effective, with sales nearly doubling by the end of 2016.

The “Don’t Be a Scooper” Strategy

Following the success of the Instagram initiative, Zuppke pushed for the company to bring its marketing efforts in-house. During a creative retreat, the team sought to address the primary pain point of cat ownership: the manual labor of scooping. This led to the creation of the “Don’t Be a Scooper” advertising campaign. The provocative spots, which featured employees alongside professional actors, were designed to dramatize the unpleasantness of traditional litter boxes.

The campaign was not without its detractors. Zuppke noted that some customers expressed discomfort with the messaging, particularly a scene involving chocolate icing that some found off-putting. However, Zuppke viewed the polarizing nature of the ads as a success, arguing that having a distinct point of view is essential for brand growth. During the two-year period this campaign was active, the company’s revenue more than quadrupled.

Scaling a Tech-Driven Empire

Since Zuppke joined the company—which has since rebranded as Whisker—the business has seen a 55-fold increase in revenue, reaching over $1.5 billion in lifetime sales. The company has evolved significantly from its early days, growing from a team of 25 to approximately 650 employees today. Central to this expansion is a heavy investment in research and development. In 2015, the company employed only one engineer; today, that number has grown to more than 70.

This engineering talent has allowed Whisker to integrate advanced technology into its products. Modern Litter-Robot units now utilize cameras, weight sensors, and machine learning to monitor feline bathroom habits. This data is synced to an app, allowing owners to track their pets’ health and receive alerts regarding potential issues. These products, which retail between $599 and $999, are manufactured in Juneau, Wisconsin, while the company maintains its headquarters in a Detroit suburb.

Leadership and the Future

Zuppke, who was named CEO in late 2021, succeeding founder Brad Baxter, emphasizes a culture of open disagreement and personal connection. Despite the company’s rapid growth, he maintains rituals such as sending birthday messages to every staff member and conducting individual lunches to stay connected to the challenges his team faces. As he navigates the complexities of leading a larger organization, Zuppke acknowledges the personal growth required for his role, noting that he is seeking an executive coach to help manage the transition into the company’s next phase.

Interestingly, the man at the helm of this cat-care empire manages a personal challenge of his own: a cat allergy. While he keeps two Siberian cats at home, he remains vigilant about hygiene when interacting with other breeds. For Zuppke, the focus remains on the mission, even if it requires frequent hand-washing, as he continues to push the boundaries of how technology can simplify pet ownership.
