Zamfara State Voter Registration Increases by 16% Ahead of 2027 General Elections

Olamide

The Independent National Electoral Commission reports a significant rise in the voter population in Zamfara State, with over 2.2 million citizens now registered for the upcoming 2027 polls.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a notable expansion in the voter register for Zamfara State, signaling increased civic participation ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to data released by the commission, the state’s total number of registered voters reached 2,265,175 as of August 2026.

Growth in Voter Population

This figure represents a 16.04% increase compared to the 1,952,060 voters recorded during the 2023 general elections. Dr. Mahmuda Isah, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Zamfara State, disclosed these figures during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Gusau. The data indicates that 313,115 new voters have been added to the electoral roll since the previous election cycle.

Dr. Isah emphasized that this growth necessitates a renewed focus on voter mobilization and public enlightenment efforts to ensure that the electorate is well-informed about the upcoming electoral processes.

Ensuring Electoral Integrity

Addressing concerns regarding the accuracy of the voter register, the REC stated that the commission is committed to a rigorous verification and validation process. This procedure is intended to align with existing electoral laws and established commission protocols to maintain the credibility of the register.

While the commission is taking steps to clean and verify the data, specific details regarding the timeline for these validation exercises or the specific methodologies being employed were not provided in the initial announcement.

Permanent Voter Card (PVC) Collection

A critical component of the commission’s current strategy involves the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). Following the conclusion of the initial collection phase at the ward level, INEC has transitioned the process to its local government area offices.

Registered voters who have not yet obtained their cards are encouraged to visit their respective local government INEC offices to collect them. The commission has stressed that this process must be completed personally by the voter, reiterating the importance of the PVC as a mandatory requirement for participation in the 2027 elections.

Conclusion

The increase in registered voters in Zamfara State suggests a growing interest in the democratic process. As the 2027 general elections approach, the focus for INEC and local stakeholders remains on finalizing the voter register and ensuring that all eligible citizens have the necessary documentation to cast their ballots. The commission continues to urge the public to engage with official channels to verify their registration status and secure their PVCs.
