Sporting Lagos Keeps Up Away Momentum as Rivers United Claims League Summit

Olamide

A dramatic 3-2 away victory against Plateau United lifted Sporting Lagos into contention, while Rivers United climbed to the top of the league standings following a rain-interrupted draw.

Sporting Lagos continued their remarkable away form this season with an eventful 3-2 victory over Plateau United, according to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). The result makes the Lagos club the first team to reach double digits in away points this campaign, maintaining pressure on the league leaders.

Sporting Lagos Edges Five-Goal Thriller

According to league reports, Sporting Lagos took an early lead in the 10th minute when Aliyu Baba latched onto a pass from Solomon Uloko and rounded goalkeeper Okiemute Odah. Plateau United responded vigorously, with Victor Dawa equalizing from distance 10 minutes before the interval and then striking again in first-half stoppage time to give the home side a 2-1 lead.

Sporting Lagos fought back eight minutes after the restart, as Victor Samuel finished from close range following an assist from Baba. Plateau United’s momentum suffered late in the second half when Alex Aghahowa received a second yellow card for a foul on Hadi Haruna. Capitalizing on their numerical advantage, Sporting Lagos secured the winning goal in the 83rd minute through Jacob Aondona, sealing their third away win in five road matches (three wins, one draw, one loss).

Rivers United Moves to the Top

The win brought Sporting Lagos within two points of the league summit, where Rivers United moved into first place on 17 points. Playing at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Rivers United were held to a 0-0 draw by Barau FC. The fixture experienced disruption when heavy rainfall caused a waterlogged pitch, forcing a stoppage at the 75th minute before play was concluded the following day. Rivers United now sits level on points with defending champions Rangers International—who were away on continental duty—leading the table on goal difference.

Key Results Across the League

Elsewhere across the league’s weekend fixtures, Nasarawa United recorded a 2-0 away win over Inter Lagos courtesy of first-half goals from Kelechi Ogbodo and Ugochukwu Leonard. In a regional clash, Kano Pillars secured a 1-0 win against rivals Katsina United with an early strike by Yahaya Ibrahim, while Enyimba and Warri Wolves shared points in a goalless stalemate.

Niger Tornadoes defeated Ikorodu City 2-1, surviving a debut goal from substitute Basit Ayinde. Meanwhile, both Saturday fixtures ended 1-1, with Doma United drawing against Kun Khalifat and Kwara United being held by Abia Warriors. The matchday opened on Friday in Ibadan, where Shooting Stars claimed a 3-1 win over Ranchers Bees.

The competition is scheduled to continue next weekend as teams prepare for Matchday 10 fixtures.
