From Runway to Boardroom: Ashley Graham Reflects on the Challenges of Entrepreneurship

Olamide

A decade after making history as the first plus-size model on the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover, Ashley Graham is navigating the complexities of the business world, including the humbling experience of fundraising for her own wine brand.

A New Chapter in Business

Ten years after shattering industry norms as the first plus-size model to grace the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, Ashley Graham has evolved into a formidable businesswoman. During a recent appearance at Business Insider’s ‘The Long Play’ event in New York City, the 38-year-old discussed her transition from the runway to the boardroom, detailing how she has successfully expanded her influence into sectors ranging from skincare and baby care to the alcohol industry.

Graham, who boasts a massive social media presence of nearly 30 million followers, noted that her career trajectory has been defined by a simple realization: “My body is my business.” She explained that her focus has shifted toward scaling that brand identity into sustainable, long-term ventures.

The Challenges of Fundraising

One of the most significant hurdles in her recent entrepreneurial journey has been the launch of Lucci, a sparkling Italian Lambrusco wine brand co-founded in February. Unlike her previous collaborations, Lucci represented a new challenge: it was the first time Graham had to actively solicit capital from investors.

Reflecting on the process, Graham described the experience as “very, very hard and humbling.” She highlighted that for the first time in her career, she was required to justify her strategic decisions to investors, marking a significant learning curve. She also expressed surprise at the “ruthless” nature of the venture capital world, while acknowledging the potential for substantial success within that ecosystem.

Strategic Investments and Industry Impact

Graham’s business portfolio extends well beyond her own product lines. She has become an active investor, backing companies such as the period-care brand Rif Care, the infant-formula company Bobbie, and the sustainable skincare brand Fig.1 Beauty. In 2022, she deepened her involvement with Fig.1 by becoming a partner, opting for a role that went beyond a traditional celebrity endorsement.

Her investment strategy often mirrors her personal life. As a mother of three, she has gravitated toward brands that align with her current lifestyle, including baby care and women-led startups. Her business acumen has also seen successful exits, most notably the acquisition of the antacid startup Wonderbelly by Procter & Gamble earlier this year.

Balancing Motherhood and Professional Growth

Graham’s professional life has run parallel to significant personal milestones. Since marrying Justin Ervin in 2010, she has balanced a high-profile career with raising three children. This commitment to authenticity extends to her modeling work; when she walked the Victoria’s Secret runway in 2024—two years after giving birth to twins—she made it clear that she was not interested in being a “token” or a “one-trick pony.” Before accepting the role, she engaged the company in discussions regarding their plans to expand size inclusivity.

Looking ahead, Graham shows no signs of slowing down. During the event, she teased an upcoming venture: a home company inspired by her children, slated for launch next summer. As she continues to build her empire, Graham emphasizes the importance of intentionality, stating that she has learned to be selective about her projects and the teams she trusts to help bring her vision to life.
