Rangers Urged to Hold Firm in Algeria for CAF Champions League Ticket

Following a 2-0 first-leg victory while down to ten men, Nigerian champions Rangers International face a decisive return fixture against MC Alger in the CAF Champions League.

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) leadership has urged domestic champions Rangers International to stay disciplined and finish the job in their upcoming CAF Champions League qualification clash against Algerian side MC Alger.

According to reports from the league body, Rangers hold a 2-0 advantage heading into the decisive second leg following a resilient performance in Abeokuta. Despite being reduced to ten men during the first fixture, the Nigerian champions secured a two-goal cushion to take on their journey to North Africa.

Navigating a Demanding Away Environment

Dr. Ayo Abdulrahman, the Chief Operating Officer of the league, attended the opening leg and praised the squad’s fortitude under difficult circumstances. He noted that winning by two goals while playing at a numerical disadvantage demonstrated commendable determination from both the players and the technical staff.

However, the league executive cautioned that the return fixture will require total composure. Rangers scheduled their departure for Tuesday to acclimate ahead of the Friday match in Algeria, where local supporters often create an intimidating atmosphere for visiting clubs.

Abdulrahman stressed that the squad must be mentally prepared for external pressure, warning that the fixture would be far from easy. He advised the team to remain focused on tactical demands, absorb psychological pressure from the home crowd, and remain resilient in defense when tested by their opponents.

High Stakes for Continental Representation

Beyond individual team success, the encounter carries broader significance for Nigerian club football on the continental stage. Advancing to the group stage of the CAF Champions League delivers vital financial incentives to participating clubs. Furthermore, sustained progress by domestic representatives is critical to protecting Nigeria’s allocation of four continental slots in future competitions.

The return encounter is scheduled to kick off at 8:00 p.m. on Friday in Algeria, with local weather forecasts anticipating conditions around 26 degrees Celsius. Rangers enter the tie needing only to protect their two-goal margin to secure passage into the lucrative group phase.
