A missed penalty and defensive lapse cost Kwara United all three points in their Nigeria Premier Football League clash with Abia Warriors.

Kwara United missed an opportunity to claim maximum points on home soil on Saturday, settling for a 1-1 draw against Abia Warriors in Matchday 9 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). The fixture, staged at the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl of the George Innih Stadium in Ilorin, was defined by missed chances and a critical second-half penalty that failed to hit the target.

Early Pressure and a Breakthrough

According to the match report published by the league, Kwara United established early momentum. In the 27th minute, the hosts nearly took the lead when successive efforts from Abdulsalam Abdulsalam and Thomas Omokhafe both struck the crossbar.

The breakthrough arrived seven minutes later. In the 34th minute, midfielder Ferinyaro Ali converted a long-range opportunity, driving a direct free kick past the Abia Warriors goalkeeper to put the home side ahead 1-0. Ali’s performance, highlighted by the strike, subsequently earned him the league’s Man of the Match honors.

Defensive Error and a Squandered Penalty

Abia Warriors responded shortly after the restart. In the 52nd minute, forward Emmanuel Nnaji took advantage of a defensive breakdown that left Kwara United goalkeeper Suraj Ayeleso exposed, calmly slotting home the equalizer to level the score at 1-1.

Kwara United received a prime opportunity to restore their advantage in the 64th minute when winger Stephen Gideon was brought down inside the penalty area by the visiting goalkeeper. However, the hosts were unable to capitalize on the spot kick. Penalty taker Muhammed Alao fired his effort against the crossbar, marking the third time the woodwork denied the home side during the encounter.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq was among the spectators present in the stands during the second half as both sides chased a winner, though neither side could break the deadlock before the final whistle.

Technical Crew Aims to Address Shortcomings

Following the final whistle, Kwara United head coach Ashifat Sulyman expressed deep disappointment with the outcome, highlighting the squandered penalty and inability to finish key chances. Sulyman offered an apology to supporters and stated that the technical staff would prioritize improving the squad’s efficiency in front of goal during training ahead of subsequent league fixtures.
