Police in Oyo State Rescue Infant and Detain Suspects in Alleged Child Trafficking Case
Authorities in Oyo State have recovered a one-month-old baby girl reportedly sold for two million naira and taken the child's mother and a clinic operator into custody.
Law enforcement authorities in Oyo State, Nigeria, have rescued a one-month-old baby girl and arrested two individuals, including the child’s mother, following an alleged child trafficking transaction. According to a report by Daily Post Nigeria citing the Oyo State Police Command, the newborn was allegedly sold for two million naira in the Ido Local Government Area of Ibadan.
Disappearance Reported by Family
The investigation began after a formal report was lodged with law enforcement officials on October 15. Police spokesperson DSP Olayinka Ayanlade confirmed the operation in a public statement, identifying the complainant as Mary Amos, a resident of the Ogunwade area in Ido. Amos contacted the authorities after noticing that her infant granddaughter had vanished, prompting an immediate investigation into the child’s whereabouts.
Following the report, officers opened an inquiry that led to questioning the child’s mother, identified by police simply as Cecilia. According to law enforcement accounts, the mother subsequently admitted to participating in the arrangement and implicated others in the transaction.
Details of the Alleged Transaction
Investigators stated that the mother told detectives she had been approached and persuaded to give up the child by the 40-year-old operator of the local health facility where the infant was delivered, alongside another individual. The child was reportedly handed over to a buyer identified by police as Odunayo.
Financial records and statements collected during the preliminary inquiry indicate that the overall exchange was valued at two million naira. According to the police command, the child’s mother allegedly received one million naira from the sum, while two other individuals involved in organizing the transaction each took 500,000 naira. Further personal details regarding the alleged buyer and the specific nature of the medical facility were not immediately disclosed in the police report.
Ongoing Search and Police Advisory
Following the initial findings, police operatives located and safely recovered the infant. Officers also arrested Adeleke, identified as the facility owner. Law enforcement noted that operational efforts remain underway to locate an additional person of interest named Folawewo, as well as any other parties linked to the arrangement, to ensure they face judicial proceedings.
Reiterating its stance on offenses involving minors, the Oyo State Police Command issued an advisory calling on members of the public to remain vigilant. The command emphasized that safeguarding children and vulnerable citizens remains a key priority and urged local residents to immediately report any suspected instances of human trafficking or related misconduct to nearby security personnel.
