NECO Result Timing Exposes Calendar Gaps in University Admissions

October 16, 2026 · Olamide

A disconnect between the release of NECO secondary school exam results and university screening cutoff dates left prospective Nigerian tertiary students navigating conflicting deadlines.

The release of the 2026 National Examinations Council (NECO) examination results has highlighted a persistent scheduling mismatch between testing bodies and tertiary institution screening deadlines across Nigeria, according to an investigation by the Daily Post.

NECO released results for its internal Senior School Certificate Examination on September 24, 2026, roughly 63 days after testing concluded on July 23. Of the 1,371,992 candidates who sat for the examinations, 804,948—representing 58.67 percent—secured at least five credits including Mathematics and English. However, because several universities enforced credential upload cutoffs well before late September, many applicants relying on NECO scores were caught in an administrative squeeze.

Discrepancies in Institutional Deadlines

The practical impact varied significantly depending on where students sought admission. The Daily Post reported that the University of Lagos closed its O’Level document upload window on August 24—a full month prior to the release of the NECO scores. A review of university announcements by the news organisation found no subsequent notice establishing a revised submission window for NECO candidates.

Conversely, several other federal and state institutions amended their screening schedules. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, opened a portal window until September 30 for candidates awaiting results or wishing to update their credentials. The University of Ilorin provided a brief two-day opening in late September, though the short notice required some families to travel in person to address application issues. Further extensions into early to mid-October were granted by the University of Abuja, the Federal University of Lafia, and Nasarawa State University, Keffi, with the latter citing technical token verification issues alongside deadline extensions.

Systemic Oversight and Data Shortfalls

The gap between testing and admission processing reflects a multi-year trend. Historical figures show the gap between the final examination paper and result publications stood at 58 days in 2023, 55 days in 2024, 54 days in 2025, and 63 days in 2026.

NECO Registrar Professor Dantani Wushishi stated at the result announcement that NECO does not plan to adjust its internal timeline, asserting that admissions authorities must structure their calendars around the integrity of the evaluation process. Meanwhile, regulatory oversight remains fragmented. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) told the Daily Post that it does not currently maintain statistical records on how many active applicants are awaiting NECO results, though it acknowledged such tracking could benefit future policy planning. At the same time, groups such as the Owners of Private Schools Association of Nigeria had unsuccessfully pushed for a formal pause in tertiary admissions until all major examination boards published their scores.

Without centralized coordination among testing agencies, university senates, and admissions regulators, prospective students continue to navigate an irregular patchwork of institutional deadlines.
