NCDC Monitors 53 Ebola Contacts in Abuja, Implements Financial Support Program
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention is tracking 53 individuals exposed to an Ebola index case in the Federal Capital Territory, offering weekly stipends to those under mandatory quarantine.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has initiated a comprehensive contact-tracing operation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following the identification of an Ebola index case. According to the NCDC, 53 individuals have been identified as primary contacts of the patient, a 42-year-old woman who recently returned to Nigeria from Uganda via Addis Ababa.
Details of the Index Case
The NCDC reports that the patient, who is married to a Swiss Embassy staff member, arrived in the country on October 3. She began exhibiting symptoms—specifically fever, diarrhea, and body pains—on October 7. The agency is currently managing the situation to prevent further transmission within the region.
Contact Tracing and Quarantine Protocols
Dr. Jide Idris, the Director-General of the NCDC, addressed the press on Sunday to outline the scope of the containment efforts. The 53 primary contacts currently under observation include:
- 47 healthcare workers from the facility where the patient initially sought treatment.
- The patient’s husband, driver, and chef.
- Three additional healthcare workers who provided care in the emergency room.
These individuals are subject to a 21-day monitoring period, which is the standard incubation window for the virus. Furthermore, the NCDC has deployed teams to identify and track secondary contacts to ensure the containment net remains secure.
Financial Support for Quarantined Individuals
In a notable development, the NCDC has announced a financial support initiative for those under quarantine. Dr. Idris stated that the agency will provide a stipend of N100,000 per week to each of the 53 contacts. This decision follows complaints from the affected individuals regarding the disruption to their personal businesses and livelihoods caused by the mandatory isolation.
“We have traced 53 Ebola contacts. We are providing N100,000 to each person per week just to maintain their comfort and feeding, because they were complaining,” Dr. Idris explained.
Developments in Rivers State
In a separate update, the NCDC addressed concerns regarding a suspected Ebola case in Rivers State. Dr. Idris confirmed that the patient has tested negative for the virus. Although initial reports indicated the patient was suffering from multiple-organ failure, the NCDC reports that their condition has shown remarkable improvement.
Conclusion
The situation in the FCT remains under active monitoring by federal health authorities. While the NCDC has moved quickly to isolate primary contacts and mitigate the economic impact on those quarantined, the agency continues to emphasize the importance of vigilance. As of this report, no further details regarding the long-term containment strategy or the specific status of the index case have been released by the NCDC.
