Israeli Election Campaign Intensifies Amid Rise in AI-Generated Smear Tactics
As Israel approaches a pivotal national election, political campaigns have increasingly relied on AI-generated content and personal attacks, drawing criticism for crossing ethical boundaries and deepening societal divisions.

With Israel’s upcoming election just days away, the political atmosphere has become increasingly volatile. According to reports from Channels Television, campaigns have moved beyond traditional policy debates, frequently employing inflammatory rhetoric, personal attacks, and sophisticated digital manipulation to sway voters.
The Role of AI in Campaign Strategy
A central feature of this election cycle is the widespread use of AI-generated imagery and video. Candidates from across the political spectrum are utilizing these tools to depict opponents in compromising or damaging scenarios. For instance, opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot recently shared a video on X featuring AI-generated characters, including a Hamas militant and Iran’s Supreme Leader, to criticize Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security policies.
Similarly, Netanyahu’s Likud party has been accused of weaponizing AI to stoke fears regarding potential opposition coalitions. Examples include doctored clips suggesting that Jewish opposition politicians are secretly aligned with Arab-Israeli candidates, as well as imagery depicting a crumbling parliament. Netanyahu’s camp has denied allegations regarding the specific manipulation of content involving Eisenkot’s family, though the incident sparked significant public outcry.
Personal Attacks and Social Polarization
The intensity of the campaign has led to personal vitriol, often targeting candidates’ backgrounds or personal tragedies. Thair Abu Ras, head of the Forum for Regional Thinking at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, noted that the rhetoric from Netanyahu’s camp appears aimed at delegitimizing Arab-Israeli participation in the political process. Furthermore, racialized language has surfaced; a commentator on the pro-Netanyahu Channel 14 recently faced backlash for using a derogatory term to describe Eisenkot, who is of Moroccan Jewish descent.
Bereavement has also become a battleground. Candidates who lost family members in the ongoing conflicts following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks report being targeted by smear campaigns. Laly Derai, a candidate for the Amcha Israel party who lost a son in Gaza, described a campaign of harassment that includes threatening phone calls and posters near her home and her children’s school bus routes.
Impact on Public Discourse
The use of digital media to pit citizens against one another has reached the families of hostages as well. Social media pages associated with political factions have been used to contrast the images of hostage relatives—praising those who support the current administration while casting vocal critics as frenzied or dangerous. As the country prepares for Tuesday’s vote, analysts suggest that these tactics are exacerbating existing tensions within Israeli society.
While the effectiveness of these aggressive digital campaigns remains to be seen at the ballot box, the current election cycle marks a significant shift in how political messaging is conducted in Israel, with technology playing a primary role in shaping the national narrative.
