Edo State Power Restoration Imminent Following Resolution of Labour Dispute
Electricity supply is expected to return to Edo State after the state government and the Nigeria Labour Congress reached an agreement in Abuja to resolve a leadership dispute.

Residents of Edo State are set to see the restoration of electricity following a high-level intervention in Abuja that resolved a protracted dispute between the state government and organised labour. The agreement, which marks the end of a power outage that had gripped the region, was mediated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.
The Path to Resolution
The dispute centered on the Edo State government’s recognition of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) caretaker committee. According to a press release from the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Patrick Ebojele, the resolution was finalized during a closed-door meeting involving key stakeholders, including Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, Minister of Labour and Employment Dr. Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
Governor Okpebholo stated that the state government has committed to recognizing the caretaker committee and will collaborate with labour leaders to facilitate a substantive election. “There is no issue actually, and we have resolved the issues that border the NLC caretaker committee in Edo,” the Governor noted following the meeting.
Addressing the Power Outage
The power crisis in the state was driven by two distinct but overlapping issues. The first involved an industrial disagreement between the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) regarding staff welfare and remuneration. The second was the political impasse regarding the leadership of the state’s NLC chapter.
NLC President Joe Ajaero confirmed that with the political dispute settled, the union has moved to restore electricity services immediately. Minister of Labour and Employment Dr. Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi added that the NLC is expected to conduct a substantive election for its Edo chapter within a three-to-six-month window.
Restoring Industrial Harmony
Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who attended the meeting, characterized the conflict as a “communication gap” that has since been bridged. He emphasized the importance of rebuilding trust between the state government and labour unions to ensure long-term industrial harmony. The SGF, Senator George Akume, praised the participants for their willingness to utilize dialogue to address the grievances rather than allowing the impasse to continue.
While the immediate restoration of power is the primary concern for the public, the agreement also outlines a framework for future cooperation. The state government and labour leaders have pledged to work together for the collective progress of Edo State. As of the time of reporting, the specific timeline for the full normalization of the electricity grid remains subject to the operational directives of the NUEE and BEDC following the resolution of their internal industrial disputes.
Conclusion
The resolution in Abuja serves as a significant step toward stabilizing the socio-economic environment in Edo State. By addressing both the leadership recognition issues and the underlying industrial concerns, the stakeholders have paved the way for the restoration of essential services, provided that the agreed-upon timelines for elections and cooperation are maintained.
