INEC Finalizes Candidate Lists for 2027 Elections After Reviewing 130 Petitions

Olamide

The Independent National Electoral Commission has concluded a review of 130 petitions regarding the 2027 governorship and State Houses of Assembly candidate lists, resulting in the dismissal of 64 complaints and the removal of ineligible candidates.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially concluded its review of candidate nominations for the upcoming 2027 governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections. According to a statement released on October 30, 2026, by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of the Commission’s Information and Voter Education Committee, the electoral body has processed 130 petitions filed by various political parties, leading to significant adjustments to the final candidate lists.

Breakdown of the Petition Review Process

The petitions submitted to INEC addressed a range of concerns, including the alleged omission of political parties from official lists, the inclusion of individuals not found in party membership registers, and instances of multiple nominations. The commission categorized the petitions based on the election type:

  • Governorship Elections: Twelve political parties submitted 69 petitions across 26 states. INEC approved 41 of these complaints while dismissing 28.
  • State Houses of Assembly Elections: Eleven political parties submitted 61 petitions across 11 states. Of these, 25 were upheld, while 36 were rejected.

In total, the commission rejected 64 petitions across both categories. INEC indicated that where complaints were found to be justified, the commission moved to include the affected parties and candidates in the revised lists.

Addressing Ineligibility and Compliance

A central component of the review was ensuring that all listed candidates met the legal requirements for nomination. As a result of the verification process, INEC confirmed the removal of certain candidates whose names were deemed to have been wrongly published or who failed to satisfy the necessary legal criteria for candidacy.

The commission has stated that the updated lists, which detail the specific changes, affected candidates, and relevant political parties, are being published on the official INEC website. This step is intended to provide clarity to the public and the political stakeholders involved in the 2027 electoral cycle.

Commitment to Electoral Integrity

The review process serves as a mechanism for addressing grievances during the pre-election period. By evaluating these petitions, the commission aims to resolve administrative disputes before the formal commencement of the election season. In its statement, the commission reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining transparency and upholding the credibility of the electoral process.

While the commission has provided these figures, it has not yet released a comprehensive breakdown of the specific states or political parties most impacted by the removals beyond the general summary provided in the official announcement. Stakeholders are encouraged to consult the updated documentation on the INEC portal for state-specific details.

As the 2027 election cycle approaches, these administrative adjustments represent a critical phase in finalizing the ballot, ensuring that only candidates who adhere to established legal and party-specific protocols are positioned to contest the upcoming polls.
