Federal Inquiry Reportedly Seeks to Revoke Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Citizenship
A federal investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar aims to strip her citizenship and pursue deportation over decades-old paperwork, according to reporting cited by Vox.

Federal law enforcement officers recently executed a search at the Washington, D.C., residence of Representative Ilhan Omar as part of an investigation aimed at revoking her citizenship and deporting her, according to reporting outlined by Vox and The Wall Street Journal.
Details of the Federal Inquiry
Homeland Security agents conducted the search at the Minnesota Democrat’s home on a Monday. The probe reportedly centers on immigration documents submitted by Omar’s father when she was a minor. Omar arrived in the United States as a refugee at age 12 and was naturalized as an American citizen at age 17.
According to the reports, investigators are examining whether her family misrecorded her age during the entry and naturalization process decades ago. If the government were to succeed in stripping her citizenship, Omar would also lose her eligibility to serve in the United States Congress.
The Legal Mechanism for Denaturalization
Under United States law, the executive branch cannot unilaterally nullify an individual’s naturalization. In order to revoke citizenship, federal prosecutors must bring a formal case before a judge, who must rule on whether naturalization was obtained unlawfully or through deliberate misrepresentation.
Historically, denaturalization has been an exceptional and rare legal remedy. However, as noted in the Vox report, broader reporting from NBC News earlier this year showed that the Justice Department had begun targeting hundreds of naturalized citizens for potential legal action, with an ambition to file hundreds of cases each month.
Breach of Justice Department Norms
The raid also represented a noticeable departure from established Department of Justice practices. Traditionally, the department follows an unwritten rule against undertaking conspicuous, politically sensitive investigative steps within 60 days of an election to prevent law enforcement actions from interfering with political campaigns.
Omar, an outspoken critic of the administration, has frequently been a target of public attacks from executive leadership. The use of federal investigative resources to challenge the legal status of an incumbent lawmaker reflects an aggressive shift in immigration enforcement priorities.
Looking Ahead
Whether the government moves forward with formal court filings to revoke Omar’s citizenship remains to be seen. The matter would face strict judicial scrutiny in federal court, but the commencement of searches against an elected member of Congress marks a dramatic escalation in federal denaturalization efforts.
