A tense three-hour hostage standoff at a kindergarten in southern Brazil ended after tactical police fatally shot an armed intruder who had barricaded himself inside a classroom with 13 children, regional authorities reported.

The incident unfolded in the Sao Braz neighborhood of Curitiba, the capital of Parana state located roughly 400 kilometers (250 miles) south of Sao Paulo. According to local law enforcement, the confrontation concluded without fatalities among the hostages, though one child sustained an injury during the incident.

The Standoff Inside the Classroom

According to Parana police spokesperson Leticia Martins, the intruder breached the facility by climbing over an exterior gate before forcing his way into a classroom where 13 young children were present. Once inside, the man seized the children and poured a flammable liquid across the floor, threatening to ignite the building with a lighter.

Martins noted that the suspect was armed with a knife and an item that initially appeared to be a handgun, which investigators subsequently determined was an imitation firearm. Specialized crisis negotiation teams established contact with the man, working for approximately three hours in an attempt to secure a peaceful surrender. However, the suspect’s underlying motive was not disclosed by officials.

Tactical Intervention and Rescue

As negotiations dragged on, the atmosphere inside the classroom grew increasingly volatile. Alexandre Lopes Dias, commander of the Parana state military police special forces unit, stated that the suspect remained in close physical contact with the captives, at one point holding one child on his lap.

According to Lopes Dias, the decision to carry out a forced tactical entry was made when officers determined that the children were becoming acutely distressed and the assailant allegedly began physically assaulting them. Specialized officers moved in to neutralize the suspect to eliminate the threat of fire or severe violence. While official details on the precise execution of the breach were limited, local media reported hearing the deployment of flash-bang devices before officers emerged carrying children from the facility.

Aftermath and Lingering Questions

Lopes Dias confirmed to reporters that the suspect was killed during the tactical operation. The commander noted that the man was diagnosed with schizophrenia, but police withheld the individual’s name as well as specific technical details regarding how he was killed. Law enforcement officials also noted that at least one child suffered an injury during the event, though authorities did not specify the severity of the injury or how it was sustained.

Following the operation, Curitiba Mayor Eduardo Pimentel posted a statement on social media expressing relief that all 13 children had survived the harrowing situation, describing the rescue as a major relief after anguishing moments. Local authorities continue to review the security perimeter and response protocols surrounding the incident.
