Billboard Hot 100 Milestone: The Rare Club of Albums With Three or More No. 1 Hits
Only 33 albums in chart history have produced three or more Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers, a rare threshold recently crossed again by Taylor Swift.
Earning a chart-topping single on the Billboard Hot 100 is one of the most prominent benchmarks in the music industry. Generating three or more from a single studio project, however, remains exceptionally rare. According to a historical review compiled by Business Insider, only 33 albums have ever achieved that feat since the all-genre singles chart debuted in 1958, excluding greatest-hits packages.
A Rare Feat in the 21st Century
The achievement has grown increasingly elusive in recent decades. The report notes that of the 33 qualifying albums, only 12 were released in the 21st century. Changing listening habits, fractured formats, and rapid streaming turnover have made multi-hit domination from a single album release an unusual occurrence.
Taylor Swift recently rejoined the ranks with her 12th studio project, The Life of a Showgirl. According to Business Insider, the addition of the track “Patient Zero” on the deluxe release The Encore sent a third song to the top of the Hot 100, following earlier chart-toppers “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite.” It marks the first album by a female artist to achieve three Hot 100 leaders in over a decade, since Swift’s own 1989 reached the threshold following its 2014 release.
The All-Time Record Holders
While reaching three No. 1 singles establishes an album in elite company, a handful of releases have pushed the total even higher when counting deluxe reissues:
- Katy Perry, Teenage Dream (2010): Holds the all-time high with six No. 1 tracks, including additions from its reissue, The Complete Confection.
- Michael Jackson, Bad (1987): Produced five No. 1 singles from its original standard tracklist.
- Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, George Michael, and Paula Abdul: Each released late-1980s albums that produced four Hot 100 champions.
An Exclusive Roster Across Eras
Only a small group of artists have managed to land multiple albums on the list. In addition to Swift, multiple entries belong to The Beatles, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Rihanna. Historical soundtracks have occasionally crossed the bar as well, most notably the 1977 disco phenomenon Saturday Night Fever.
As Business Insider observed, qualifying projects have frequently relied on deluxe track additions or extended promotional campaigns to reach the milestone. Even with alternate editions included, the 33-album tally underlines just how difficult sustained chart dominance remains across seven decades of modern chart tracking.
