Alexandr Wang Credits Meme-Heavy Social Strategy With Boosting Meta’s AI Assistant

October 12, 2026 · Olamide

Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang says his unconventional, meme-driven social media posts helped fuel growth for the tech giant's newly released AI assistant, Muse.

Meta’s chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, has credited an unconventional marketing tactic with helping drive adoption for the company’s personal AI assistant: posting memes. In a recent interview with podcaster David Senra reported by Business Insider, the 29-year-old executive explained that his frequent and unscripted posts on X were part of a deliberate effort to alter public perceptions of the social media conglomerate.

An Unconventional Approach to AI Promotion

Wang recounted that he frequently brainstormed memes during internal corporate meetings, noting that his colleagues were initially surprised by the engagement his posts generated. According to Wang, the lighthearted campaign was not merely a distraction; he claimed the posts “actually made an impact on growth” for Muse, Meta’s flagship personal assistant tool.

Addressing his chaotic posting habits, Wang stated that digital audiences often respond well to boldness from leadership. “I remembered that the internet rewards risk,” he told Senra, adding that a willingness to post spontaneously without extensive deliberation helped create viral momentum around the product.

The Trajectory of Meta’s Muse

According to Business Insider’s reporting, Muse experienced rapid early adoption after its September 8 release. Within ten days of its debut, the application rose to the number-one spot on Apple’s App Store, temporarily surpassing rival AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Meta designed Muse to serve as an actionable personal assistant rather than just a conversational chatbot. Among its stated capabilities are:

  • Conducting web research and completing digital forms
  • Facilitating online purchases and booking dining reservations via OpenTable
  • Connecting directly to consumer accounts including Spotify, email, calendars, and Instagram
  • Assisting users with personal logistics, such as locating dog sitters

Business Insider noted that the launch marked a notable commercial breakthrough for Meta’s consumer AI division, arriving after previous models such as Llama encountered entrenched competition from offerings created by OpenAI and Anthropic.

Reframing the Corporate Image

Beyond driving user counts, Wang indicated that his online posture was intended to refresh Meta’s broader reputation. Despite operating major cultural platforms like Instagram and Facebook, Wang argued that the parent company had historically struggled to appear “cool.”

By adopting an irreverent online tone, Wang sought to present a contrast to traditional, scripted corporate communications. As competition among tech giants and specialized AI developers intensifies, his approach underscores how executives are increasingly using personal social media platforms to cultivate consumer attention.
