Olamide

Authorities in Yobe State have apprehended three individuals linked to a string of agricultural equipment thefts, recovering generators and solar panels following a community-led intervention.

The Yobe State Police Command has announced the arrest of three suspects involved in the theft and handling of stolen agricultural equipment in the Bursari Local Government Area. The operation, which led to the recovery of various power and irrigation tools, followed a swift response to reports of criminal activity in the region.

The Initial Apprehension

According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Yusuf Adamu Aliyu, the investigation began on October 21, 2026, following a distress call to the Garin Alkali Divisional Police Headquarters. Residents in the vicinity of Tarabutu Village successfully apprehended 40-year-old Musa Mohammed, who was allegedly caught in the act of stealing farm equipment.

Upon arrival, police detectives took the suspect into custody. During subsequent questioning, Mohammed reportedly implicated two other individuals, identified as Mohammed Baki of Gashua and 27-year-old Haruna Wakil Sano, also known as ‘Kogi’.

Recovery of Stolen Assets

The investigation expanded quickly as detectives traced the stolen goods to an alleged receiver, Adamu Abubakar, based in Gashua LGA. A search of Abubakar’s residence resulted in the recovery of several items, including:

  • Two water pump generators
  • Multiple discharge and suction hoses
  • Two gas cylinders
  • Ten solar panels

These items are currently held by the police as they are suspected to have been stolen from the Duhuwu Nima farm area.

Ongoing Police Operations

Following the initial arrests, police conducted a follow-up operation on October 22, 2026, which led to the capture of Haruna Wakil Sano. While three suspects are currently in police custody, authorities have confirmed that efforts are still underway to locate and apprehend the remaining suspect, Mohammed Baki, who remains at large.

Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, issued a commendation to the officers involved in the recovery of the equipment. In his statement, the Commissioner encouraged members of the farming community and the general public to maintain high levels of vigilance. He urged citizens to report any suspicious movements or activities to their nearest police formation to assist in preventing further agricultural theft.

Context and Security

While the police have provided details regarding the arrests and the recovered items, specific information regarding the total value of the stolen goods or the history of similar incidents in the Bursari area was not disclosed in the official report. The case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by local farmers in protecting their infrastructure and the role of community cooperation in assisting law enforcement efforts.

As the investigation continues, the Yobe State Police Command remains focused on securing the remaining suspect and processing the evidence for potential legal proceedings.
