The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) has announced plans
to host a dedicated conversation centered on the intersection of journalism and
the civic space in Nigeria. This initiative aims to address the growing concerns
regarding the environment in which media practitioners and civil society actors
operate within the country.

## Focusing on the 2025 Status Report

A central component of the upcoming session is the formal presentation of a policy
brief derived from the WSCIJ’s 2025 status report. The report, titled _Silenced
Voices, Shrinking Space: Civic Freedoms Under Pressure_, is expected to provide
a detailed examination of the current climate for free expression and journalistic
inquiry.

### Key Themes of the Discussion

While the WSCIJ has not yet released the full agenda for the event, the title of
the accompanying report suggests a focus on several critical areas:

 * **The State of Civic Freedoms:** An evaluation of how current policies and social
conditions impact the ability of citizens to engage in public discourse.
 * **Journalistic Challenges:** An exploration of the obstacles faced by reporters
in the field, particularly those investigating sensitive public interest issues.
 * **Policy Recommendations:** The session is intended to offer actionable insights
based on the findings of the 2025 status report to help stakeholders navigate
   the current environment.

## Contextualizing the Civic Space

The term “civic space” refers to the set of conditions—legal, political, and social—
that allow individuals and organizations to participate in the life of their society.
According to the WSCIJ, the upcoming conversation is designed to highlight how these
conditions have come under pressure in recent times. By providing a platform for
this discussion, the organization seeks to foster a dialogue between media professionals,
civil society representatives, and other relevant stakeholders.

## Looking Ahead

The WSCIJ has not provided specific details regarding the date, time, or venue for
this event in their initial announcement. However, the focus on “Silenced Voices”
indicates a commitment to addressing the systemic issues that may be hindering the
work of journalists and activists. As the organization prepares to unveil its policy
brief, the event is expected to serve as a significant touchpoint for those monitoring
the health of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the safety of its press corps.

The WSCIJ continues to play a role in advocating for investigative excellence and
the protection of media rights. Further information regarding the event’s logistics
is expected to be released by the center in the coming weeks.
