World Bank Report Warns of Rising Energy and Food Costs Through 2027

Olamide

A new World Bank outlook projects significant price hikes for energy and food commodities, driven by geopolitical instability and climate-related supply disruptions.

The World Bank Group has released its latest Commodity Markets Outlook, signaling a period of economic pressure as energy and food costs are expected to climb through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027. According to the report, global markets face significant volatility stemming from geopolitical conflicts and environmental factors.

Drivers of Price Volatility

The World Bank identifies the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as a primary catalyst for the projected rise in energy costs, which are estimated to reach a four-year high. The report notes that these tensions have led to a depletion of oil reserves. Additionally, the outlook points to disruptions in global maritime shipping, which have constrained the supply of grains. Environmental challenges, specifically the threats posed by El Niño to agricultural harvests, are also cited as major contributors to declining food affordability.

Projected Commodity Trends

The report provides specific forecasts for the coming months:

  • Energy prices: Estimated to rise by 32% in 2026.
  • Food commodity costs: Projected to increase by 10%.
  • Overall commodity prices: Expected to rise by 23% in 2026 before seeing a projected decline of 7% in 2027.

These projections are contingent upon the assumption that there will be no significant escalation of current conflicts in the Middle East or in Europe, where the report notes that Russian refineries have already faced damage.

Economic Implications and Policy Response

Ayhan Kose, the World Bank’s Deputy Chief Economist and Director of the Prospects Group, warned that these rising costs could exacerbate existing global issues, including inflation, food insecurity, and sluggish economic growth. Kose emphasized that the international community must prioritize protecting vulnerable populations and supporting low-income nations that are currently managing significant debt burdens.

In response to these challenges, the World Bank stated that it has between $50 billion and $60 billion available through existing financial instruments, which includes $25 billion in pre-arranged financing. Beyond immediate relief, the institution reaffirmed its commitment to long-term development, specifically focusing on job creation and investment in the youth of developing countries.

Conclusion

While the World Bank’s forecast suggests a challenging period for global commodity prices, the institution maintains that its existing financial mechanisms are positioned to assist countries in navigating these economic headwinds. The outlook underscores the fragility of global supply chains and the necessity of international cooperation to mitigate the impact on the world’s poorest populations.
