White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia Departs After Five Days in Role

Olamide

Katie Zacharia has exited the White House press secretary position less than a week into the job following scrutiny over her professional credentials and debut briefing.

White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia has left her position after only five days on the job, following intense public scrutiny over her legal credentials and criticism of her performance during her debut press briefing, according to reporting from Daily Post Nigeria.

While media reports indicated that Zacharia had been removed from the post, the White House described her departure as a transition out of the high-profile communications role.

Questions Over Professional Credentials

The primary controversy surrounding Zacharia involved her professional legal background. Although introduced as an attorney, reports emerged that she had not passed a bar examination in the United States. During her first formal meeting with the press corps, a journalist questioned where she had sat for the bar, to which Zacharia replied that it occurred “when I moved to China.”

She later acknowledged that she had never passed a bar examination, though she maintained that she had practiced international transactional law with appropriate qualifications. A Reuters investigation cited in the report found no public records showing she had ever been admitted to the bar or registered as an attorney in Washington, D.C., or any U.S. state. Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine University’s law school in 2011 and worked for the Beijing-based firm Zhong Lun between 2011 and 2013 before transitioning into corporate communications, including work for Trump Media & Technology Group.

A Brief Appearance in the Briefing Room

Zacharia assumed the post on Monday, October 12, succeeding former press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who left the administration in August. Her official tenure quickly ran into headwinds following her first formal press conference the next day.

The briefing concluded in under 15 minutes, with Zacharia taking questions from only three reporters. Media observers and critics noted the brevity of the event and highlighted her heavy reliance on prepared briefing notes while addressing questions from the press.

Trump Comments and Administration Fallout

Speaking to journalists prior to traveling to a campaign rally in Georgia, President Donald Trump addressed the situation directly, stating that he had spoken with Zacharia about her future after she faced intense media coverage.

“I just spoke to her about it. I said, ‘Katie, is this for you?’” Trump said, noting that he informed her she was under no obligation to remain in the demanding role if she preferred not to.

The sudden personnel change comes at a sensitive political moment, as the administration prepares for upcoming midterm elections that will determine party control in Congress. The White House has not yet released a detailed public explanation regarding the specific circumstances behind her rapid departure, and an immediate successor has not been confirmed.
