Wealth Management Evolution: How AI is Reshaping the Advisor’s Role

Olamide

Rick Nott, a senior managing director at Angeles Investments, shares how AI automation is transforming financial advisory workflows while emphasizing the irreplaceable value of human connection in wealth management.

The Automation Shift in Wealth Management

For Rick Nott, a senior managing director and private wealth advisor at Angeles Investments in Santa Monica, the arrival of advanced AI tools like Claude has been a turning point. Rather than fearing obsolescence, Nott has embraced AI as a powerful tool to handle the tedious, manual data tasks that have historically bogged down the financial advisory profession.

Nott notes that while he is not a professional software developer, the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) has allowed him to bridge the gap between various systems and workflows. By leveraging these tools, he has effectively automated data collection and portfolio analysis, which he estimates has provided him with the output equivalent of an additional full-time employee.

Solving the Complexity Problem

The core challenge in wealth management, according to Nott, is the sheer complexity of a client’s financial life as their net worth grows. While standard banking and brokerage accounts are straightforward, managing trusts, business ownership structures, and private investments requires significant manual labor to analyze and synthesize.

Nott provides a striking example: a firm managing 30 families, each with 10 private investments, must process roughly 3,000 documents annually. Previously, this required a team of analysts spending 750 to 1,500 hours a year racing against quarterly deadlines. With AI, this data can be extracted and mapped upon arrival, allowing a single analyst to review the output rather than managing a labor-intensive manual process. This efficiency has enabled Nott to offer high-level balance sheet reporting to clients with lower net worths—a service that was previously reserved only for those with over $100 million due to the high cost of manual labor.

The Human Element Remains Central

Despite the efficiency gains, Nott remains firm that AI is not a replacement for the human advisor. He draws parallels to previous industry disruptions, such as the rise of ETFs, low-cost investing, and robo-advisors. He argues that those who view the advisor’s role merely as portfolio construction or contract drafting fundamentally misunderstand the profession.

“As long as investing involves human judgment, financial advisors will have a job,” Nott explains. He describes his role as the “architect of a financial operating system,” where the advisor helps families stay focused on their long-term mission, navigate tax strategies with CPAs, and manage liquidity. Because money is inherently emotional, Nott questions whether AI will ever be able to replicate the nuance required to understand client needs or the value of sitting across from a human being to discuss sensitive financial matters.

Operational Challenges and Future Outlook

While optimistic, Nott is not without concerns regarding the integration of AI. He points to the shift from subscription-based models to token-based pricing as a potential pitfall for smaller firms. Without proper expertise, he warns that users could face unexpected costs by using AI to process large documents for simple queries. He notes that his own firm’s internal pricing analysis suggested that a token-based model would be significantly more expensive than their current licensing.

Ultimately, Nott views these technological advancements as a means to an end. By reducing the time spent on manual data entry and reporting, advisors can refocus their energy on the core of their business: developing relationships and providing personalized guidance to the people they serve.
