A recent video circulating on social media has drawn significant attention to the
campaign activities of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The footage captures
Vice President Kashim Shettima and the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda,
jogging toward the podium during a rally held at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar,
Cross River State.

## Context of the Viral Video

In the short clip, the Vice President is seen moving quickly toward the stage, followed
by the party’s National Chairman. Upon reaching the podium, Shettima engaged in
dance moves, an action described by observers as an effort to boost the energy of
the attendees present at the stadium. The display has become a focal point for political
discourse, with various interpretations emerging regarding the intent behind the
public display of physical activity.

## Political Reactions and Interpretations

The incident has prompted reactions from prominent political commentators and social
media users. Aisha Yesufu, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)
and a vocal supporter of presidential candidate Peter Obi, suggested that the Vice
President’s actions were a response to a broader political challenge. Writing on
her official X handle, Yesufu claimed that Peter Obi had effectively given Nigerian
politicians an “assignment” to demonstrate their physical fitness.

This sentiment was echoed by other online voices. Shehu Gazali Sadiq, an influencer
on X, characterized the display as a deliberate attempt by the ruling party to counter
public narratives regarding the fitness of President Bola Tinubu. Sadiq’s commentary
also included criticisms of the rally’s overall atmosphere, alleging that the event
lacked the expected enthusiasm and crowd turnout. These claims regarding the rally’s
attendance and the atmosphere remain subjective assessments from social media participants
and have not been independently verified.

## The Role of Optics in Campaigning

The discourse surrounding the video highlights the increasing role of social media
in shaping political narratives. In a competitive election cycle, public appearances
are frequently scrutinized for symbolic meaning. Supporters of the APC may view
such displays as a sign of vitality, while opposition figures often interpret them
through the lens of political theater. As the January 16 election approaches, both
the ruling party and the opposition continue to utilize public rallies as platforms
to project strength and influence voter perception.

## Conclusion

The viral video of Vice President Shettima underscores the intense scrutiny placed
on political figures during campaign seasons. While the footage has been used by
opposition voices to critique the APC’s campaign strategy and the perceived fitness
of its leadership, it also illustrates the ongoing battle for public perception.
As the election date draws closer, voters can expect continued debate over the symbolic
gestures and public appearances of all major candidates.
