Villa Vie Odyssey Residents Left Stranded After Sudden Cruise Shutdown
Residents of the Villa Vie Odyssey were given just eight hours to vacate the vessel in Cambodia as the company halted operations citing uncontrollable fuel costs.
A Sudden Departure
For the residents of the Villa Vie Odyssey, a long-term residential cruise that promised a life at sea, the journey came to an abrupt and emotional end this week. Passengers aboard the ship, which was docked in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, were issued a directive on October 27, 2026, to disembark the vessel within a mere eight-hour window. The notice, delivered at 6 a.m., left many scrambling to pack their lives into suitcases before the 2 p.m. deadline.
Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin, who have resided on the ship since its maiden voyage in September 2024, expressed their heartbreak over the sudden development. While they acknowledged that the possibility of a shutdown had been discussed, the brevity of the notice caught them and their fellow passengers off guard.
The Financial Breaking Point
Villa Vie Residences, the operator of the vessel, attributed the cessation of operations to the skyrocketing cost of fuel. According to the company, the geopolitical instability stemming from the conflict in Iran has caused fuel prices to surge significantly. In some regions of Asia, fuel expenses per cabin have risen by as much as 344%, climbing from an average of $1,800 to between $6,000 and $8,000.
Mikael Petterson, the executive chairman of Villa Vie Residences, expressed deep regret over the situation. He explained that the company had been in negotiations with a potential investor to secure a necessary cash infusion, but the deal collapsed last week, leaving the company with no further options to sustain operations. “I’m the villain in the story, but I’m doing everything I can to support the residents on a solution forward,” Petterson stated.
Internal communications from August 2026 reveal that the company had been struggling with cash flow for some time. CEO Kathy Villalba had previously reached out to residents, requesting “fuel contributions” beyond their contractual obligations to keep the ship moving, noting that participation in these requests had not been universal.
Life After the Odyssey
The atmosphere on the ship following the announcement was described by some as a “ghost town.” Passengers like Barbara Fiegel, who had been living on the ship since late 2024, found the experience deeply distressing. Fiegel and her partner were forced to secure local hotel accommodations in Cambodia while returning to the ship in shifts to retrieve their belongings.
Other residents, such as Joel Greiff, who had joined the cruise earlier in October with the intention of staying for decades, are now forced to reconsider their long-term plans. While some, like Greiff, are looking into temporary housing in Cambodia or neighboring Thailand, the future of the Villa Vie Odyssey remains uncertain.
Villa Vie Residences has stated that it is currently working to assist residents with temporary living arrangements. The company is also evaluating potential restructuring options, a process they expect to take approximately 60 days. For now, the residents are left to process the sudden end of their maritime lifestyle while waiting to see if the company can find a path to resume operations.
