Villa Vie Odyssey CEO Issues and Retracts Emotional Apology as Cruise Operations Stall
The CEO of Villa Vie Residences, Kathy Villalba, issued a heartfelt apology to residents of the Odyssey cruise ship following the sudden suspension of its global voyage in Cambodia, only to delete the message hours later.
A Sudden Halt to the Odyssey Dream
The ambitious promise of permanent life at sea has hit a significant roadblock. Villa Vie Residences, the company behind the Odyssey cruise ship, officially halted operations this week while docked in Cambodia. The vessel, which featured 509 cabins, was designed to circumnavigate the globe every three-and-a-half years, offering residents a unique, permanent nomadic lifestyle. However, the dream came to an abrupt stop on Tuesday morning, when passengers were given only a few hours’ notice to disembark the ship.
An Apology That Vanished
In the wake of the disruption, Villa Vie CEO and founding partner Kathy Villalba reached out to the affected residents via the company’s internal messaging platform, Circle. In an emotional memo, Villalba expressed deep regret for the “pain, the loss, and the uncertainty” that the residents are currently enduring. She described the ship as her “baby” and acknowledged that for the passengers, it was their home.
However, the message proved to be short-lived. Residents confirmed that the apology was deleted from the platform only hours after it was posted. According to the text of the memo, Villalba stated that the intense media scrutiny surrounding the company’s situation had become “overwhelming.” She noted that reporters had begun contacting her family members, leading her to seek legal counsel. On the advice of her lawyers, she indicated she would refrain from making further public comments, citing concerns that even internal communications on the Circle platform were no longer private.
Hope for a Resident-Led Rescue
Despite the cessation of operations, Villalba’s message suggested that the company has not entirely abandoned the project. She revealed that Villa Vie remains in ongoing discussions with potential investors. Furthermore, she expressed a desire for a resident-led initiative to purchase the ship to succeed, stating that the company stands ready to assist in that effort to preserve the lifestyle the passengers had grown to love.
In her message, Villalba reflected on the personal toll the situation has taken, noting that she had poured her heart and soul into the venture for nearly two years. She expressed a profound sense of loss, writing, “I still don’t want this to be the end.”
Uncertainty Remains
As of now, the future of the Odyssey and its residents remains unclear. Neither Kathy Villalba nor Villa Vie Residences have responded to requests for comment regarding the reasons behind the deletion of the memo or the specific circumstances surrounding the sudden halt in Cambodia. For now, the residents, many of whom are currently stranded, are left to navigate the fallout of a voyage that promised a permanent home but ended with a sudden departure.
