The 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign for Venezuela has officially concluded
following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Nigeria’s Flamingos. The result, determined by
a late penalty, ended the South American side’s aspirations in the tournament, though
the coaching staff remains focused on the long-term development of the squad.

## A Decisive Moment in a Defensive Battle

According to reports from _Daily Post Nigeria_, the match was characterized by a
resolute defensive effort from the Venezuelan side, which managed to hold off the
Nigerian attack for the majority of the contest. Despite being outplayed for significant
portions of the game, Venezuela appeared to be successfully steering the match toward
a penalty shootout.

The deadlock was broken in the final stages of the game. A pivotal officiating decision
occurred when Venezuela defender Migleydys Bolsegui was ruled to have committed
a foul against Nigeria’s Oluebube Umejiaku inside the box. Azeezat Oduntan stepped
up to convert the resulting spot-kick, securing the win for the Flamingos and advancing
them to the final four of the competition.

## Reflecting on Growth and Future Prospects

Following the match, Venezuela head coach Dayana Frías addressed the outcome, acknowledging
the singular lapse in concentration that ultimately cost his team the game. Frías
noted that while the team performed well defensively, the high stakes of the tournament
left little room for error.

> “It was a good performance overall, but I think we made one mistake and paid for
> it. As for the experience, it’s been really beautiful and rewarding,” Frías told
> FIFA.

Beyond the immediate disappointment of elimination, Frías emphasized the developmental
benefits of the tournament for his players. He highlighted the progress made by
the squad throughout their time in the competition, noting that the experience serves
as a foundation for future international play.

Looking ahead, the Venezuelan program appears to be prioritizing continuity. Frías
confirmed that seven members of the current squad remain eligible to compete in
the U-17 category next year. He expressed confidence that these players are prepared
to build upon their current development and return to the international stage with
increased maturity.

## Conclusion

While the 2026 tournament ends in a quarter-final exit for Venezuela, the coaching
staff views the experience as a vital step in the growth of their young athletes.
With a core group of players eligible to return, the focus for the Venezuelan team
now shifts toward future cycles and the continued evolution of their youth football
program.
