Following the tragic shooting of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong in the Bronx, President Donald Trump has reportedly agreed to assist in securing a visa for the boy's mother to travel from Ghana.

President Donald Trump has reportedly committed to facilitating an expedited visa for Doris Gyamfi, the mother of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, who was fatally shot while walking to school in the Bronx. The announcement was made by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Saturday, following a telephone conversation between the mayor and the President.

The Circumstances of the Tragedy

Javits Frimpong, who had relocated from Kumasi, Ghana, to New York in October 2025 to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong, was killed in a morning shooting. Police transported the teenager to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. As of Saturday evening, authorities were actively searching for three teenage suspects, though no arrests had been made and no specific motive for the shooting had been established.

The victim’s father described his son as a bright student with aspirations of becoming a physician. Thomas Frimpong noted that his son had previously reported incidents of bullying at DreamYard Preparatory School, which resulted in the suspension of two students. However, law enforcement officials have not confirmed a connection between those bullying reports and the fatal shooting.

Governmental and Diplomatic Response

The incident has prompted a significant response from both local and international officials. Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, stated that he had reached out to the bereaved family on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama. The Ghanaian government has pledged to cover the costs of the mother’s travel, provide assistance with the visa process, and contribute to funeral expenses.

Minister Ablakwa expressed appreciation for the intervention, stating, “The Government of Ghana welcomes your intervention and President Trump’s timely decision.” Local representatives, including Bronx Congressman Ritchie Torres, have also offered condolences, emphasizing the impact of the loss on the local community.

Current Status of the Investigation

While Mayor Mamdani’s announcement regarding the visa facilitation has been widely reported, the White House had not independently confirmed the arrangement as of Saturday evening. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether the visa has been officially issued to Gyamfi. The New York City Department of Education has pledged full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation, while members of the local Ghanaian community and religious leaders have organized vigils to mourn the teenager and call for justice.

Conclusion

The death of Javits Frimpong has sparked a coordinated effort between U.S. and Ghanaian authorities to support his grieving family. While the diplomatic efforts to bring his mother to New York are underway, the investigation into the shooting remains active, with the community awaiting further updates from law enforcement regarding the suspects involved.
