Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Dismisses Concerns Over Neocloud Debt Amid Market Volatility

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has downplayed investor fears regarding the debt levels of neocloud companies, asserting that the sector remains a minor part of the broader AI landscape.

A Calm Stance on AI Financing

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has publicly addressed the growing anxiety surrounding the debt levels of neocloud providers, a sector that has recently faced significant scrutiny from investors. Despite market jitters and rising yields on AI-related debt, Bessent indicated that he remains unbothered by the current financial state of these companies.

During a recent interview with CNBC, the Treasury Secretary was questioned about the trend of yields on some AI-focused debt instruments climbing into the double digits. Bessent responded by stating that while his office monitors these developments closely, he does not view the situation as inherently problematic. He emphasized that the neocloud industry represents only a small segment of the total artificial intelligence ecosystem, suggesting that the broader market is not at risk.

The Role of Neoclouds in the AI Boom

Neocloud companies, including notable firms such as CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN, have become central players in the AI infrastructure boom. These businesses specialize in providing cloud computing services tailored specifically to the needs of AI developers. Their growth has been fueled by massive, multibillion-dollar agreements with major hyperscalers.

For instance, Nebius secured a significant deal with Microsoft last September, valued at over $17 billion. Furthermore, in March, the company announced a five-year contract with Meta that could reach a valuation of up to $27 billion. Bessent noted that financing continues to move forward for these entities, highlighting that some major corporations, such as Meta, are opting to utilize equity financing to support their operations.

Market Pressure and Investor Skepticism

Despite the Treasury Secretary’s confidence, the neocloud sector has experienced a period of intense volatility over the past few weeks. Investors have expressed growing concerns regarding the sustainability of mounting debt levels, the impact of rising borrowing costs, and the uncertainty surrounding the long-term returns on heavy AI investments.

The market reaction has been stark. The Roundhill Neocloud ETF, which tracks key players in the industry, has seen its value drop by 24% over the last month. CoreWeave, a prominent name in the space, saw its shares tumble by nearly 40% in October, though the stock has shown some signs of recovery since hitting a low on October 23.

Mixed Outlooks from Industry Leaders

The debate over the future of these companies has drawn commentary from high-profile figures. Elon Musk recently utilized the social media platform X to voice skepticism, suggesting that many neocloud providers will face a period of “guppy-level death and consolidation.” Musk argued that debt markets are becoming increasingly hesitant to fund companies whose revenue streams are derived almost exclusively from AI data centers. He also explicitly stated that SpaceX has no intention of acquiring any companies within the neocloud sector.

Conversely, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has maintained a more bullish outlook. Nvidia, which has provided financial backing to several major neocloud providers, remains optimistic about the sector’s utility. Earlier this month, Huang described the demand for these services as being “off the charts,” characterizing the capabilities of these providers as “extraordinary.”

As the market continues to weigh these conflicting perspectives, the Treasury Department maintains that the current debt dynamics within the neocloud space do not pose a systemic threat to the broader economy.
