Tragedy in Kogi: Police Corporal Kills Girlfriend and Himself Following Relationship Dispute

A Fatal Incident in Ajaokuta

The Kogi State Police Command is currently investigating a harrowing incident that resulted in the deaths of two police corporals. The tragedy, which occurred on the night of Friday, October 23, 2026, has left the Ajaokuta division in shock after a corporal identified as Amos allegedly murdered his girlfriend, Grace, before taking his own life.

According to reports, the incident unfolded at approximately 9:00 p.m. Amos, who was stationed at the Ajaokuta division, had been assigned to night-duty guard. He reportedly commenced his shift at 6:00 p.m. but abandoned his post shortly thereafter to travel to the quarters occupied by Grace.

Details of the Attack

Upon arriving at the residence, Amos allegedly opened fire on his partner. Accounts of the incident suggest that Grace sustained three gunshot wounds—specifically to her shoulder, lower abdomen, and leg—before the assailant turned the AK-47 rifle on himself. The use of a service weapon in this domestic tragedy has raised significant concerns regarding the circumstances leading up to the event.

A History of Domestic Strife

The incident is being attributed to a volatile romantic relationship that had reportedly deteriorated over the past few months. Sources close to the situation indicate that the couple, who had been dating for several years, had been struggling with persistent trust issues and allegations of infidelity. These personal conflicts allegedly escalated into physical confrontations and verbal threats, creating a hostile environment that drew the attention of their superiors.

Evidence suggests that the situation had become so severe that the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) had previously intervened. Both officers were reportedly detained at one point due to their ongoing disputes. During this intervention, the DCO allegedly advised the pair to terminate their relationship entirely to prevent further escalations. Despite this formal counsel, reports suggest that the underlying tensions persisted, ultimately culminating in the fatal encounter on Friday night.

Official Police Response

The Kogi State Police Command has officially acknowledged the incident. Afusat Saliu, the spokesperson for the command, confirmed the occurrence in a statement provided on Sunday. While the police have initiated a formal investigation into the matter, authorities have remained cautious about providing further details while the inquiry is ongoing.

“We are aware of the incident, and the case is currently under investigation; we will update members of the public after the investigation is concluded,” Saliu stated. As the investigation continues, the community and the force are left to grapple with the aftermath of a relationship that spiraled into a double tragedy.
