After just five days in the role, White House press secretary Katie Zacharia is
stepping down, marking the shortest tenure for the position in American history,
according to a report by Business Insider. A White House official confirmed that
Zacharia was “transitioning out” of the post following a turbulent week that began
with her first formal press briefing.

## Controversy and a Rapid Departure

Zacharia served as press secretary under President Donald Trump from October 12
through October 16. Her departure followed immediate scrutiny over her professional
background. After her debut press briefing, reporters questioned her about where
she had passed the bar exam, to which she initially responded, “When I moved to
China.”

Business Insider reported that Zacharia later addressed the situation during an
interview with commentator Jack Posobiec, stating that she took the bar exam after
completing law school in 2011 but failed and never retook it. Zacharia explained
that she had preregistered prior to moving to Beijing with her husband, noting she
was distracted and overwhelmed at the time. Following her comments, two watchdog
organizations submitted complaints to the State Bar of California requesting an
inquiry into whether she breached state regulations by describing herself as an
attorney.

## Other Short-Serving Press Secretaries

According to historical records compiled by Business Insider, only four White House
press secretaries have served for fewer than two months:

 * **Stephen Early (14 days):** While Early holds the record as the longest-serving
press secretary in history after spending 12 years in the post under Franklin
   D. Roosevelt, he also holds the second-shortest stint. Early briefly returned
to the podium under President Harry S. Truman as acting press secretary from
December 5 to December 18, 1950, stepping in after the sudden death of press
   secretary Charles Ross.
 * **Jerald TerHorst (31 days):** Appointed by President Gerald Ford, TerHorst served
from August 9 to September 8, 1974. He resigned in protest after Ford decided
to issue a full pardon to former President Richard Nixon following the Watergate
scandal, stating he could not defend the action in good conscience.
 * **Jonathan Daniels (48 days):** Daniels held the role from March 29 to May 15,
1945, bridging the transition between Roosevelt’s final weeks and Truman’s early
administration before Truman named Ross to the permanent position.

## A Rare Level of Turnover

The White House press secretary role is traditionally one of the most high-profile
and demanding public-facing positions in the executive branch. While many aides
have had brief or challenging assignments over the decades, tenures lasting under
two months remain exceptionally rare, with Zacharia’s five-day term setting a modern
precedent.

  TL;DR (AI Generated)

White House press secretary Katie Zacharia has resigned after just five days in
office, setting the shortest tenure in presidential history.

Her rapid departure followed intense scrutiny and watchdog complaints regarding
misleading statements about her bar exam history.

Such exceptionally brief tenures remain extremely rare, with only a few other historical
figures serving as press secretary for less than two months.
