The Rise of the ‘Rage Economy’: Will AI Agents Solve Our Shopping Woes or Create New Chaos?

As consumer frustration hits record levels, tech companies are pitching AI agents as the ultimate solution. However, experts warn that automating our daily lives could lead to unprecedented economic instability and a loss of human connection.

The Rise of the 'Rage Economy': Will AI Agents Solve Our Shopping Woes or Create New Chaos?

The Anatomy of the Rage Economy

For many, the modern consumer experience has become a source of genuine fury. According to the 2025 National Customer Rage Survey, nearly 80 percent of Americans encountered a significant product or service issue within the past year. Even more concerning, nearly two-thirds of those individuals reported feeling genuine “rage” while attempting to resolve these problems. This phenomenon has birthed what observers call the “rage economy,” a landscape defined by high inflation, unhelpful chatbots, and a perceived decline in product quality.

The Promise and Peril of AI Agents

In response to this widespread dissatisfaction, major tech companies are promoting AI agents as the solution to our most tedious tasks. These digital assistants are designed to handle the “onerous” parts of life, such as waiting on hold with customer support or navigating complex service disputes. However, Charlie Warzel, a staff writer at The Atlantic, suggests that the initial impact of these agents may actually worsen the situation.

Warzel notes that we are currently seeing the internet being “inundated” by these persistent, non-human entities. They are flooding call centers, restaurant reservation systems, and small business communication channels. This creates an immediate imbalance: those who do not yet have access to these agents are forced to bear the burden of interacting with the automated systems of others, leading to a more inhuman and frustrating daily experience.

Economic Instability and the ‘Agentic Bank Run’

Beyond the immediate irritation of automated communication, there are deeper concerns about how these tools might reshape the global economy. Much of the current economic structure relies on human inefficiency—the fact that people do not constantly monitor every subscription, interest rate, or price fluctuation. AI agents, by contrast, are designed to be hypervigilant and capable of acting in “inhuman” ways.

If a large portion of the population begins using these agents for banking and e-commerce, the economy could begin to behave more like the stock market, with prices fluctuating in milliseconds. Warzel highlights the speculative risk of an “agentic bank run,” where millions of agents simultaneously identify a better financial opportunity and move funds en masse, potentially destabilizing banking institutions by draining deposits in an instant.

An Arms Race Between Consumers and Corporations

The integration of AI is not a one-way street. Major retailers, including Amazon, have already begun blocking certain agents from accessing their backend infrastructure. Corporations are wary of these tools acting as intelligence gatherers that could expose sensitive inventory data or pricing strategies. As this “arms race” continues, retailers are expected to impose new demands, potentially limiting the effectiveness of consumer-side agents to ensure they do not undercut corporate profits.

The Loss of Human Connection

Perhaps the most philosophical concern raised by this shift is the impact on human interaction. While companies like Meta pitch these tools as a way to reclaim time, critics argue that the drive to automate every chore is fundamentally “antisocial.” By removing the need to interact with others, society risks losing the daily, foundational human experiences that define our communities. Furthermore, there remains little consensus on what humans are actually expected to do with the time saved by these agents, raising questions about whether this automation truly serves the human experience or simply encourages more passive consumption.
