## A Spooky Tradition with a Serious Mission

Every October, as the spooky season reaches its peak, a unique group of women transforms
into the undead for a cause that hits close to home. Known as the ‘mombies,’ these
mothers have turned the iconic choreography of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ into
a powerful engine for charitable giving. What began as a creative way to celebrate
Halloween has evolved into a recurring community event dedicated to raising money
for breast cancer awareness and research.

## Growth and Dedication

The initiative, which first launched in 2016, has seen remarkable growth over the
last decade. What started as a smaller gathering of enthusiasts has nearly doubled
in size, reflecting the growing commitment of participants who are eager to contribute
to the fight against breast cancer. The preparation for these performances is no
small feat; the women dedicate weeks to rigorous rehearsals to ensure their ‘zombified’
routines are sharp, synchronized, and ready for the public eye.

## More Than Just a Performance

The ‘mombies’ do not simply perform once and call it a night. Their commitment to
the cause involves staging two distinct shows, maximizing their reach and fundraising
potential. By leveraging the popularity of the ‘Thriller’ dance—a staple of Halloween
pop culture—the group successfully draws crowds, turning an entertaining spectacle
into a meaningful opportunity to collect donations. The fusion of theatrical performance
and philanthropy serves as a testament to how community-led initiatives can create
tangible impact.

## The Spirit of the ‘Mombies’

The term ‘mombies’—a playful portmanteau of ‘moms’ and ‘zombies’—has become a badge
of honor for the participants. By embracing the aesthetics of the undead, these
women have found a way to bring levity to a serious subject. Their annual flash
mob serves as a reminder that the fight against breast cancer requires both sustained
financial support and the kind of community spirit that keeps people engaged year
after year. As they continue to grow, the ‘mombies’ remain focused on their primary
objective: using their platform to support those affected by breast cancer while
keeping the Halloween spirit alive in their community.
