The McRib Returns: McDonald’s Iconic Sandwich Defies Its Own ‘Farewell’ Tours

Olamide

Forty-five years after its debut, the elusive McRib is back on the menu in select cities, continuing a decades-long cycle of dramatic disappearances and high-profile comebacks.

A Legacy of Limited Availability

For over four decades, the McDonald’s McRib has maintained a unique status in the fast-food world. Known for its irregular appearances and cult-like following, the barbecue-slathered pork sandwich has once again returned to select locations as of October 27, 2026. This latest release, available in cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Dallas, serves as the latest chapter in a history defined by scarcity and marketing theatrics.

The Accidental Origin Story

The McRib was not born from a long-term strategic plan but rather from a supply chain necessity. Following the 1979 introduction of the Chicken McNugget, the item became so popular that franchises faced shortages. To provide an alternative, McDonald’s chef René Arend sought to create a new product. Inspired by a trip to South Carolina, Arend developed the McRib, utilizing a “restructured meat product” technology created by Richard Mandigo at the University of Nebraska. While the patty was shaped to resemble a slab of ribs, it contains no actual bones.

From Test Market to Pop Culture Icon

The sandwich officially debuted in test markets in 1981. Although it initially drew interest, repeat sales were sluggish, leading to its removal from menus by 1985. However, the sandwich eventually secured a permanent place in the cultural zeitgeist, notably through a 2003 parody on The Simpsons. By 2007, the limited-time nature of the product had become a successful business model, with McDonald’s reportedly selling 30 million units that year. The fervor reached such heights that in 2008, a fan named Aaron Klein launched a crowdsourced website specifically to help others track down the sandwich.

The Perpetual Farewell Tour

In recent years, McDonald’s has leaned into the sandwich’s scarcity by framing its departures as “farewell tours,” a tactic reminiscent of rock bands that continue to perform long after their final shows. The company held farewell events in 2005, 2006, and 2007. A major “farewell tour” was announced in 2022, signaling to fans that the item might be gone for good. Yet, the sandwich returned in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

The 2020 nationwide return was particularly significant, as it helped bolster sales during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, Linda VanGosen, McDonald’s vice president of menu innovation, described the McRib as more than just a menu item, calling it a “season” that takes the internet by storm. Despite the hype, some critics have remained underwhelmed, noting that the experience often fails to live up to the marketing, with some reports citing inconsistent sauce application.

Looking Ahead

As the McRib makes its return in late 2026, the cycle of anticipation and disappointment continues. While the sandwich is currently available in specific metropolitan areas, McDonald’s has advised customers in other regions to monitor the official mobile app for potential local availability. Whether this is truly the final iteration or merely another pause in the McRib’s long-running saga remains, as always, uncertain.
