The Analog Parenting Challenge: One Couple’s Commitment to a Screen-Free Toddlerhood

Olamide

A couple shares their journey of raising a toddler without digital distractions, navigating the daily temptations of convenience versus their commitment to an analog childhood.

The Philosophy of an Analog Childhood

For many parents, the digital age presents a constant dilemma: how much screen time is too much? For one couple, the decision was made long before their child was born. Renate Flanagan and her husband established a parenting framework centered on avoiding cellphones, tablets, and television for their son. Their goal was to foster a childhood defined by physical play—blocks, cars, and coloring books—rather than digital engagement.

This decision was part of a broader set of values the couple established early on. They prioritized linguistic development, aiming to raise their son to be bilingual in English and Dutch, and favored real-world experiences, such as visiting European castles, over traditional vacation destinations. While the plan was clear in theory, the reality of raising a nearly three-year-old has tested their resolve.

Navigating the Temptations of Convenience

The couple admits that the allure of screen time is strongest during moments of high stress or exhaustion. Dining out, for instance, often highlights the stark contrast between their lifestyle and that of other families. While they frequently observe other children quietly occupied by tablets in restaurants, allowing their own son to remain seated for an entire meal is a rare occurrence. Often, the parents must take turns walking their active toddler around the restaurant, sometimes missing the chance to eat together entirely.

The pressure also mounts during unexpected disruptions, such as when daycare facilities close. During a recent winter snowstorm, the couple found it nearly impossible to balance remote work with the constant attention their son required. Despite the frustration of juggling childcare responsibilities, they chose to alternate days off rather than rely on cartoons to keep him occupied, fearing that introducing screens would create a dependency that would be difficult to reverse.

Exceptions and Real-World Engagement

While the couple maintains a strict stance, they have implemented specific, limited exceptions. Their son is permitted to participate in video calls with his grandparents and may watch educational or news programs in Dutch, or cooking shows, provided his parents are watching with him. They also allowed for temporary exceptions during major global sporting events like the Olympics and the World Cup. Interestingly, the parents note that when adult-oriented programming is on, their son typically loses interest quickly and returns to his toys.

The Rewards of Active Interaction

Despite the challenges, the parents believe their choice has yielded tangible benefits. They attribute their son’s gregarious nature to his constant interaction with his surroundings. Because he is not distracted by a screen, he engages deeply with the world, leading to unique social experiences. These include being invited to meet chefs at local restaurants, receiving special attention from waitstaff, and even gaining rare access to public service vehicles. On one occasion, a local police officer allowed the toddler to sit in a patrol car and activate the sirens, while a local fireman has welcomed him to explore a fire engine.

While the parents acknowledge that life might be simpler if they utilized technology as a distraction, they remain committed to their original vision. They value the moments of genuine engagement their son experiences with the world around him, viewing the trade-off as worthwhile despite the occasional envy of a more peaceful, screen-assisted meal.
