The 2001 Opportunity: Did Real Madrid Almost Sign Lionel Messi?

Olamide

Former Real Madrid official Miguel Ángel Portugal claims the club had a chance to sign a young Lionel Messi before he cemented his legacy at Barcelona.

A new account from former Real Madrid technical secretary Miguel Ángel Portugal suggests that the Spanish giants were once presented with an opportunity to sign Lionel Messi during his early development. The revelation, shared in an interview with the Spanish newspaper AS, points to a period in 2001 when Messi’s future at Barcelona was not yet fully secured by a professional contract.

The Context of the Reported Approach

According to Portugal, who served in various roles at the Santiago Bernabéu between 2007 and 2009, the potential transfer opportunity arose while Messi was still a teenager in Barcelona’s youth academy. Messi had joined the Catalan club in 2000 at the age of 13 after moving from Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina. At the time of this reported approach, he had not yet finalized a professional renewal with Barcelona.

Portugal stated that an individual close to the young player reached out to Real Madrid to gauge their interest. “There was a time when they could have snapped him up. He didn’t yet have a professional contract with Barça, he hadn’t quite finalised his renewal, and someone close to him offered him to Madrid,” Portugal explained, as cited by Madrid Universal.

Why a Deal Did Not Materialize

Despite the information reaching the club, Portugal clarified that the situation never escalated into formal negotiations. He cited a sense of professional courtesy as a primary factor in the club’s decision-making process at the time.

“I don’t know if it was true or not, word reached the club that they could go after him. The opportunity was there. We didn’t want to sever ties with Barça, but there was indeed some contact. Although, out of respect, I don’t think it would have gone ahead,” Portugal noted.

Portugal emphasized that he could not independently verify the authenticity of the information provided to the club during that period. Consequently, the inquiry remained informal and did not lead to any concrete action from the Real Madrid hierarchy.

A Legacy Defined at Camp Nou

Following this period, Messi continued his development within the Barcelona youth system, eventually making his first-team debut in 2004. His subsequent career at Camp Nou saw him become one of the most decorated players in football history. Over his tenure with the club, he recorded 672 goals in 778 competitive appearances and secured eight Ballon d’Or awards.

While this account provides a glimpse into the uncertainty surrounding Messi’s early years, it remains a retrospective claim regarding a path not taken. The story serves as a reminder of the complex and often opaque nature of youth scouting and transfer rumors in professional football, where many potential deals are discussed but never reach the stage of formal contract negotiations.

Ultimately, the reported approach to Real Madrid remains an unverified historical footnote, as Messi’s long-standing association with Barcelona became the foundation for his global career.
