Tanker Catches Fire in Strait of Hormuz After Striking Naval Mine, Iran Says
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards reported that an oil tanker caught fire after hitting a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the third such maritime incident in two days amid regional conflict.
An oil tanker traversing the Strait of Hormuz caught fire on Monday after detonating a naval mine, according to statements from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reported by Iranian state media and Channels Television.
The incident represents the latest escalation in the narrow waterway, which historically handles roughly one-fifth of the world’s petroleum transit. Iran took control of the passage following the outbreak of hostilities involving the United States and Israel in late February, subsequently instituting strict transit rules requiring all commercial vessels to obtain prior clearance from Tehran before proceeding.
Details of the Explosion
According to the Revolutionary Guards’ official statement, the unnamed tanker suffered an explosion that triggered a blaze inside its engine room. Iranian authorities claimed the vessel was traveling along an unapproved southern corridor in violation of established transit protocols.
Iranian officials also stated that the ship had deactivated its onboard positioning and navigation transponders prior to the blast. The Revolutionary Guards’ naval commander, Admiral Ali Ozmaei, recently issued a warning that any commercial vessel attempting to navigate the strategic corridor with disabled tracking equipment would be treated as hostile by Iranian forces.
The report did not specify the identity of the tanker, the flag under which it was sailing, the status or nationality of its crew members, or whether maritime rescue operations were launched to extinguish the engine room fire.
Pattern of Maritime Incidents
Monday’s blast follows a nearly identical episode reported just twenty-four hours earlier. On Sunday, Iranian military officials stated that two other oil tankers caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after encountering naval mines under similar circumstances.
The recurring explosions underscore the extreme operational risks facing international commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf. In response to Iran’s maritime blockade of the corridor, the United States has enforced a naval counter-blockade targeting Iranian oil exports, creating an intense maritime standoff around key regional choke points.
Broader Geopolitical Fallout
With shipping companies navigating tightened restrictions and rising physical hazards, the security situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains highly precarious. The enforcement of unilateral transit approvals and the placement of naval mines threaten to further disrupt international energy supply chains.
As of Monday, independent maritime monitoring organizations had not yet confirmed the vessel’s ownership or assessed the extent of the environmental damage resulting from the engine room explosion.
