## The Evolving Role of Armor

The battlefield in Ukraine has sparked intense debate among military experts regarding
the future of the main battle tank. With the proliferation of inexpensive, highly
effective drones capable of destroying multimillion-dollar armored vehicles, some
have questioned whether the era of the tank is drawing to a close. However, US Army
officers and personnel training in Germany maintain that the tank remains a vital
asset, provided its operational doctrine undergoes a significant transformation.

At the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC) in Hohenfels, Germany, the 1st
Armored Division’s Abrams tanks are no longer operating with the expectation of
open, aggressive movement. Instead, crews are prioritizing concealment, hiding their
vehicles along treelines and deep within forests to avoid detection by overhead
surveillance. For these crews, remaining unseen has become a fundamental requirement
for survival.

## Lessons from the Ukrainian Front

The US military has been actively integrating lessons learned from the ongoing conflict
in Ukraine into its training exercises. During recent iterations of the ‘Combined
Resolve’ exercise, Ukrainian soldiers—including members of the elite 412th Unmanned
Systems Brigade—acted as an opposing force. Their performance highlighted the extreme
vulnerability of armored formations in a drone-saturated environment. In one exercise
earlier this year, the Ukrainian-led opposition force was responsible for approximately
70% of the casualties suffered by a US armored brigade within the first two days.

These exercises demonstrated that traditional practices, such as clustering vehicles
in rear areas for refueling or maintenance, are now high-risk activities. The presence
of constant drone surveillance has effectively created a miles-wide “kill zone”
where any movement can be spotted and targeted by precision strikes.

## Adapting Tactics for a New Reality

To counter these threats, the US Army is experimenting with decentralized logistics
and new movement patterns. Tank crews are learning to conduct resupply operations
under the cover of darkness and are emphasizing the need for rapid relocation once
a position is compromised. Sgt. Sean Brenna, an M1A2 Abrams gunner, noted that while
drones have changed the battlefield, they have not rendered armor obsolete. Instead,
he argues that the role of the tank is evolving, requiring crews to be more deliberate
in their maneuvers and communication.

Brig. Gen. Terry Tillis, commander of the 7th Army Training Command, emphasized
that the goal is to integrate emerging technologies—such as electronic warfare and
counter-drone systems—with traditional armored capabilities. The objective is to
enable “combined arms maneuver” that allows forces to seize and hold terrain despite
the constant threat of overhead observation.

## The Necessity of Ground Maneuver

Despite the tactical challenges posed by drones, senior Army leadership remains
committed to the necessity of armored forces. Gen. Christopher LaNeve, the acting
Army chief of staff, recently noted that while long-range fires and drones can degrade
enemy networks, they are insufficient for securing territory. According to the Army’s
perspective, the ability to seize and hold ground against an adversary’s will remains
the exclusive domain of ground maneuver forces.

As the US Army continues to refine its approach, the focus remains on balancing
the need for survival with the requirement to project power. While the “charge”
into battle may look different than it did in previous decades, the consensus among
those training in Germany is clear: the tank is not disappearing, but the way it
wages war is being fundamentally rewritten for the modern era.
