The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially confirmed Samson Adamu
as its substantive General Secretary. This appointment marks a significant milestone
in the organization’s 70-year history, as Adamu becomes the first Nigerian to hold
the prestigious position.

## A Transition from Acting to Permanent Role

Adamu’s elevation to the permanent role follows a period of service in an acting
capacity. He was initially appointed as the Acting General Secretary on March 29,
2026. This transition occurred in the wake of the resignation of his predecessor,
Veron Mosengo-Omba, a Swiss-Congolese administrator who previously held the office.

## Deep Roots in Football Administration

Adamu brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served in several high-level
positions within CAF before his current appointment. His previous tenures include
serving as the organization’s Director of Competitions and as the Director of Tournaments
and Events. These roles provided him with extensive oversight of the logistical
and operational frameworks that govern African football.

His background is deeply intertwined with the sport’s governance. Samson Adamu is
the son of Amos Adamu, a figure well-known in the international football community
for his former service on the Federation of International Football Association (
FIFA) Executive Committee.

## Official Recognition and Expectations

The appointment has been met with positive reception from domestic football authorities.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally extended its congratulations
to Adamu. Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme, the Acting General Secretary of the NFF, expressed
optimism regarding the appointment, stating that he expects Adamu to represent the
country with distinction in his new capacity.

## Looking Ahead

As the substantive General Secretary, Adamu is expected to oversee the administrative
functions of the continent’s governing body for football. While the specific strategic
priorities of his tenure have not been detailed by CAF at this time, his extensive
history with the organization’s tournament and competition departments suggests
a focus on the continued development of African football infrastructure and event
management. The appointment solidifies Nigeria’s growing influence within the upper
echelons of continental sports governance.
