Reddit Shifts to Logged-In Model as Google AI Overviews Disrupt Search Traffic
Citing a significant decline in referral traffic from search engines, Reddit is moving toward a restricted, logged-in-only experience. CEO Steve Huffman points to the evolution of AI-driven search as the primary catalyst for the change.
The End of the Search Traffic Bonanza
For years, Reddit enjoyed a surge in visibility driven by Google search results. Between May 2023 and May 2024, the platform saw a 39% increase in traffic, a period during which it also finalized a high-profile licensing deal with Google to provide data for AI training. However, the landscape of the internet has shifted rapidly since then. Reddit has now announced that it will transition to a mostly logged-in-only experience, a move attributed in part to a sharp decline in search-referred visitors.
The Impact of AI Overviews
The decline in traffic is being felt across the broader web, as users increasingly turn to AI-integrated search tools rather than traditional link-based results. In an earnings call, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman noted that Google’s AI Overviews are not functioning as traffic drivers for the platform. He observed that Google has fundamentally altered its relationship with the rest of the internet, with AI-generated summaries often providing answers directly on the search page, eliminating the need for users to click through to the source website.
This phenomenon, often referred to by publishers as “Google Zero,” suggests that referral traffic may continue to bottom out as AI services like ChatGPT and improved Google AI Overviews become the primary way users interact with information. While these tools were in their infancy in 2024, they have since become more sophisticated, allowing users to complete tasks—such as product research and shopping—without ever visiting a third-party site.
Financial Implications and Future Strategy
The shift in traffic has had tangible consequences for Reddit’s metrics. Huffman reported that search traffic was down meaningfully in the third quarter of 2026. Data from October indicated a drop of over 1 million referrals per week on average. Projections suggest that if this trend persists, the platform could see a low-double-digit percentage decline from its current base of 130 million daily active unique visits.
Despite these challenges, Reddit’s financial performance remains strong. The company reported $895 million in revenue, marking a 53% year-over-year increase. The decision to prioritize a logged-in user experience is largely driven by advertising efficiency. According to Huffman, 80% of the platform’s monetization is currently generated through app users and those who are logged into their accounts, as these users offer more precise data for targeted advertising.
A Changing Philosophy for the Open Web
The move toward a semi-closed system marks a significant departure for a platform that helped pioneer the concept of the open internet. Addressing the community on Reddit, Huffman acknowledged the personal weight of this decision, noting that while his life has been defined by the open web, he believes this transition is necessary for the platform’s long-term business viability. As Reddit pivots, it signals a broader trend in the tech industry, where companies are increasingly prioritizing internal ecosystems over the traditional, open-search model that once defined the internet.
