President Bola Tinubu is set to leave Abuja on Thursday for a trip to Makkah, Saudi
Arabia, where he will perform the Umrah, an Islamic pilgrimage. The announcement
was made on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information
and Strategy.

## Purpose of the Visit

According to the official statement, the President’s visit is intended to serve
as a period of spiritual reflection and devotion. During his time in the Holy City,
President Tinubu plans to offer prayers for the peace, unity, stability, and progress
of Nigeria. The statement noted that the President will perform the traditional
religious rites associated with the Umrah, seeking guidance and blessings for the
country and its citizens.

## Pre-Departure Commitments

Before his departure for Saudi Arabia, the President has scheduled an official engagement
at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. At the airport’s Presidential
Wing, he is expected to inaugurate new equipment recently acquired by the Nigerian
Air Force to support its ongoing operations. This event will serve as his final
official duty in the country before traveling.

## Expected Timeline

The presidency has indicated that President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria
next week once he has completed the spiritual exercises in Makkah. No further details
regarding his itinerary or specific meetings while abroad were provided in the official
statement.

### Context on Umrah

Umrah is a non-mandatory pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time
of the year, distinct from the Hajj, which must be performed during specific dates
in the Islamic calendar. It involves a series of religious rituals, including the
Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba) and Sa’i (walking between the hills of Safa
and Marwah).

## Conclusion

The upcoming trip represents a brief period of absence for the President, who is
scheduled to resume his duties in Nigeria upon his return next week. The administration
has framed the visit as both a personal spiritual commitment and an opportunity
to seek national stability through prayer.
