Police Urge Osun Communities to Tighten Vigilance Amid Regional Kidnapping Concerns

Olamide

Police leadership in Osun State convened traditional and community leaders to enhance intelligence sharing and counter kidnapping risks following recent incidents in neighboring areas.

Police authorities in southwestern Nigeria are stepping up engagement with local leadership to curb the spread of kidnapping and violent crime. During a security dialogue in Osogbo, Assistant Inspector-General of Police Bassey S. Ewah, head of Zone XI headquarters, urged traditional leaders and Hausa community representatives in Osun State to closely monitor local movements and report suspicious activities.

According to a report by Daily Post Nigeria, the meeting brought together stakeholders from Ifewara, Ibodi, and Iwoye-Ijesa to strengthen collaboration between law enforcement and diverse community groups, with a focus on pre-empting criminal infiltration.

Addressing Intelligence Gaps and Cross-Border Threats

A primary concern raised during the session was the difficulty in establishing the identities and backgrounds of newer or transient residents across several settlements. Ewah warned that an inability to identify who lives in a community creates structural vulnerabilities that criminal networks can exploit.

The police leadership cited regional developments as an impetus for heightened vigilance, specifically referencing the recent kidnapping of teachers in the Orire Local Government Area of neighboring Oyo State. Authorities emphasized that cross-boundary security risks require proactive defenses rather than delayed reactions after incidents occur. Zone XI encompasses both Osun and Oyo states, making regional coordination central to the command’s strategy.

Pledges on Informant Protection and Access

A critical barrier to intelligence gathering in community policing is often the fear of exposure. Addressing this directly, Ewah assured attendees that the Nigeria Police Force enforces established protocols to keep the identities of informants strictly confidential.

The AIG reiterated that safeguarding lives and property is a shared civic responsibility, noting that officers cannot preempt threats without timely, actionable information from people living on the ground. He maintained that area police commands would remain accessible around the clock to field resident concerns and investigate credible leads.

Community Leaders Pledge Cooperation

The engagement included delegates representing local monarchies and Hausa residential communities, known locally as Serikis. Attendees included Chief Adubi Idowu and Chief Adejoro Adewale of Iwoye-Ijesa, alongside Hausa leaders Alhaji Haruna Tanko, Alhaji Abdullahi Waliyi, Alhaji Abubakar Sahabi, Alhaji Mubarak Ayuba, Alhaji Abdul Rosheed Usman, and Alhaji Zayaruwa Saraki from Ibodi and Ifewara.

In their remarks reported by Daily Post Nigeria, the representatives welcomed the direct dialogue with zonal command leadership. The community leaders agreed to assist in grassroots intelligence gathering, foster peaceful inter-ethnic coexistence, and encourage residents within their jurisdictions to promptly alert security agencies to suspicious behavior.

As security agencies across Nigeria navigate asymmetric crime challenges such as banditry and abduction, regional commands continue to lean heavily on localized trust-building as a first line of defense.
