Osun State Steps Up Flood Assessments as Rain Forecasts Prompt Safety Warnings
Osun State authorities have expanded flood-risk evaluations across low-lying districts, issuing urgent safety advisories to residents following recent weather alerts and ongoing rainfall.
The Osun State Government has expanded its flood-risk evaluations and emergency preparedness measures in response to persistent rainfall across several parts of the state. In an official release, authorities advised members of the public to stay alert and strictly observe local emergency instructions.
According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the state administration is actively tracking weather patterns and reviewing exposed settlements to pinpoint places requiring rapid, coordinated intervention.
Weather Alerts and On-Site Assessments
The government noted that its heightened surveillance follows a three-day forecast issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which covered rainfall expectations for Osogbo and surrounding areas. Meteorologists also anticipated additional showers and potential thunderstorms around Ede, prompting targeted warnings for riverine zones and neighborhoods that have previously experienced inundation.
As part of the evaluation, the Director-General and Special Envoy of the Governor on Climate Change and Renewable Energy conducted an initial field review in the Ede North Local Government Area. Officials stated that this inspection was arranged prior to a broader stakeholder discussion on flood control, aiming to gather localized field data to support evidence-driven policy responses.
Governor’s Directives and Master Plan
The ongoing field reviews expand upon flood-management mandates originally issued by Governor Ademola Adeleke at the start of October. Those directives instructed relevant agencies to carry out coordinated inspections across impacted communities, paying specific attention to damaged roads, culverts, and bridges.
The administration outlined several core intervention steps, including:
- Emergency clearance operations to remove debris from critical drainage pathways.
- Systematic documentation of households affected by seasonal runoff.
- Formulation of a long-term Osun State Flood and Stormwater Master Plan.
- Ongoing inter-agency coordination between local governments, state ministries, and community representatives.
State officials emphasized that sustainable flood mitigation depends on sustained investments in drainage maintenance, reliable early-warning protocols, proper municipal waste disposal, and disciplined land-use planning.
Advisories Issued to the Public
State authorities urged residents to exercise caution during heavy downpours, advising motorists and pedestrians never to attempt traversing flooded roadways, submerged culverts, or rapidly flowing channels, where water depth and velocity can easily deceive travelers. Households in flood-prone sectors were encouraged to secure valuable possessions and important documentation on higher ground if surrounding water levels begin to rise.
The announcement further called on residents to prevent trash from blocking neighborhood gutters and to report damaged infrastructure or obstructed waterways directly to municipal officials. Residents in imminent danger were instructed to evacuate to elevated ground immediately without waiting for formal alerts, while continuing to follow updates from NiMet and the Osun State Emergency Management Agency.
