Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, has publicly challenged the political
viability of Peter Obi’s recent pledge to limit his presidency to a single term
if elected. Speaking at an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Calabar, Cross
River State, on Monday, Oshiomhole framed the proposal as a strategic maneuver rather
than a genuine policy commitment.

## Defining ‘Chop and Chop Democracy’

According to the _African Examiner_, Oshiomhole utilized the term “chop and chop
democracy” to describe his interpretation of Obi’s one-term promise. While the senator
did not provide a formal definition of the phrase, the context of his speech at
the APC rally suggests he views the pledge as a populist tactic designed to gain
electoral favor without addressing the complexities of governance. The term, often
used in Nigerian political discourse, typically implies a system focused on personal
gain or the distribution of spoils rather than long-term structural development.

## Context of the Political Exchange

The remarks were delivered during an APC campaign event attended by high-ranking
party officials, including Vice-President Kashim Shettima. Oshiomhole’s critique
highlights the ongoing ideological and strategic friction between the APC and opposition
figures like Peter Obi. By questioning the sincerity of the one-term pledge, Oshiomhole
seeks to cast doubt on the feasibility of such a promise within the current Nigerian
constitutional framework, which allows for two four-year terms.

## Implications for the Electoral Debate

The debate over presidential term limits and campaign promises remains a significant
feature of the national political discourse. Oshiomhole’s intervention serves to
shift the conversation toward the motives behind campaign rhetoric. As of the report
from the _African Examiner_, there has been no immediate public response from Peter
Obi regarding Oshiomhole’s specific characterization of his platform.

The _African Examiner_ noted that the rally served as a platform for APC leaders
to consolidate support in Cross River State, with the criticism of opposition strategies
forming a key component of their messaging. The report does not provide further
details regarding the specific economic or social policies discussed during the
remainder of the event.

## Conclusion

The disagreement between Senator Oshiomhole and Peter Obi underscores the intense
scrutiny that campaign promises face in the lead-up to Nigerian elections. While
Obi’s one-term pledge is framed by his supporters as a commitment to focused, time-
bound leadership, critics like Oshiomhole view it as a political gimmick. As the
political landscape continues to evolve, the impact of such rhetoric on voter sentiment
remains a subject of ongoing debate among political observers.
