Okorocha Challenges Uzodimma Following Imo West Senatorial Candidacy Ruling
Former Imo Governor Rochas Okorocha has criticized Governor Hope Uzodimma’s camp for their public remarks against a Federal High Court judge, urging the administration to seek legal redress through the appellate process instead.
The political landscape in Imo State has intensified following a recent Federal High Court ruling that impacted the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidacy for the Imo West Senatorial seat in the 2027 elections. Former Governor Rochas Okorocha has publicly denounced the reaction of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration toward the judiciary, specifically regarding the conduct of Justice Obiora Egwuatu.
The Judicial Ruling
On October 29, the Federal High Court in Abuja delivered a judgment that removed Governor Uzodimma as the APC candidate for the Imo West Senatorial district and declared Rochas Okorocha as the authentic candidate. This decision has triggered a sharp divide within the state’s political leadership, leading to public exchanges between the two factions.
Criticism of Judicial Conduct
Following the ruling, representatives from Governor Uzodimma’s camp reportedly criticized the court’s decision, allegedly labeling the judgment as “rubbish” and “procured.” These statements suggested that the presiding judge should reflect on his professional integrity.
Speaking at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, Okorocha condemned these remarks as “horrible” and “uncivilized.” He specifically pointed to comments attributed to the Governor’s Deputy Chief of Staff and the National Vice Chairman of the APC, arguing that such rhetoric undermines the authority of the judiciary.
“So it means that whenever the judgment is for Uzodimma, then it is good but whenever it’s against him, then the judiciary is evil. This is very ridiculous,” Okorocha stated during his address.
Call for Legal Recourse
Okorocha has urged Governor Uzodimma to refrain from using what he described as “attack dogs” to insult members of the bench. Instead, he advised the Governor to utilize the formal legal system to challenge the ruling.
“I want to advise Governor Uzodimma that he should go to the Appeal Court and stop using attack dogs to insult judges,” Okorocha said. By advocating for an appeal, the former governor is calling for the dispute to be settled within the established judicial framework rather than through public disparagement.
Context and Next Steps
As of the time of reporting, the legal battle over the Imo West Senatorial ticket remains a focal point of local political discourse. While the court has made its initial determination, the path forward for both parties likely involves higher judicial scrutiny. It is currently unclear how the Uzodimma administration plans to formally respond to the judgment or if they have officially filed an appeal at this stage.
The situation highlights the ongoing tensions within the APC in Imo State, as both leaders continue to assert their respective claims to the party’s candidacy for the upcoming 2027 election cycle.
