Ogun State Targets Economic Expansion Through $17 Billion Infrastructure Pipeline

Governor Dapo Abiodun reports a surge in investor interest in Ogun State, driven by major maritime and energy projects including the Gateway Deep Sea Port and OgunLNG.

Ogun State is positioning itself as a central hub for industrial and maritime activity in Nigeria, according to Governor Dapo Abiodun. During a town hall meeting in Ijebu-Ode regarding the 2027–2029 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, the governor stated that two major infrastructure projects—the Gateway Deep Sea Port and the Ogun Liquefied Natural Gas (OgunLNG) initiative—are driving a significant increase in interest from both local and international investors.

Major Infrastructure Projects

The governor highlighted that the state has secured agreements for the development of the Gateway Deep Sea Port and the Ogun Blue Marine and Special Economic Zone. These projects, finalized during a recent visit to Paris, involve a projected $7 billion in private-sector investment. According to Abiodun, these developments are expected to reshape the state’s logistics, manufacturing, and maritime sectors without requiring direct government capital.

Complementing these maritime efforts is the proposed $10 billion OgunLNG project. Developed in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), the project is intended to bolster the state’s energy infrastructure. Additionally, the governor noted that the federal government’s ongoing construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is expected to provide essential connectivity, further opening up economic corridors within the state.

Foundational Development and Policy

Governor Abiodun attributed the current investor confidence to infrastructure and human capital investments made since 2019. The administration reports the construction or rehabilitation of over 1,700 kilometres of roads, alongside significant interventions in healthcare, such as the Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence, and education, including the recruitment of over 6,000 teachers and the refurbishment of more than 1,600 public schools.

The state is also focusing on energy stability. Power plants have been established in Abeokuta, with plans to expand similar facilities to Ijebu-Ode and Remo to support industrial and commercial growth.

Budgetary Planning and Transition

The town hall meeting served as a consultative forum for the 2027 budget. Governor Abiodun emphasized that the upcoming fiscal plan would prioritize the completion of ongoing projects and the delivery of essential services. He noted that the budget is designed to be realistic and transparent, reflecting the state’s medium-term expenditure framework.

Addressing the upcoming political transition, the governor stated that community needs identified during the consultation process that cannot be addressed in the 2027 budget will be documented as an annexure. This, he explained, is intended to ensure that developmental priorities are preserved for the incoming administration, emphasizing his view that governance should be a continuous process.

Chief Economic Adviser and Commissioner for Finance, Dapo Okubadejo, reiterated that the state’s development agenda remains focused on providing an enabling environment for private enterprise and individual prosperity. As the administration enters its final phase, the focus remains on sustaining these policies to ensure long-term economic stability for the state.
